The best argument seems to be this: if simulations are possible in the base reality, then we're almost definitely living in one, for there would be countless simulations running there. What are the odds that we're in the one base reality and not one of the many Sims?
OTOH, we don't know yet whether simulations are possible. Even if they're impossible in our (possibly simulated) reality, they may be possible in a base reality. |

If the simulation is really that frugal with resources, then I wouldn't expect it to manifest in just this really narrow way, and with complete regularity.
