Date: October 2nd, 2024 9:38 AM Author: 180 Missiles Many mornings I would wake up and find half a glass of scotch sitting on my nightstand, which allowed me to begin drinking before I even got out of bed (preferable). Of course, this was earlier in my alcoholic career when I could drink openly and drank high quality spirits. Later it was often an opened Four Loko tucked behind the headboard.
If there was no alcohol within arms length then I quickly ran through a mental checklist of hiding places where I might find a box of wine or a half pint. I would check those and, if empty, get ready for work. The nearest gas station was a stickler for state rules and would not sell me beer or wine before 7 am. But if I routed my way to work through the bad neighborhood then there was an Indian run store that would happily accept cash any time in the morning.
Since I was not expected at work for a while, I would sit in my parked car and polish off two mini boxes of wine (six glasses) and sneak a third box into work to get me through to lunch when the bars would be open.
This was every day. Every single day. |

Well, it’s true everyone eventually dies, but most alcoholics I know quit for periods of time, scale back some etc.
Yes, if you are drunk 24/7 that’s not long term sustainable and you will get health pwn3d sooner or later. Believe it or not, a couple weeks sober works miracles. But most people are not this. They may drink every day, some days more than others, but the number of people drinking 15 drinks a day is not a lot.
The vast majority of alkies live their lives, mainly functioning, and ya, they are shaving a decade or two off the end, but they go deeper and shallower into it.
The number of people who get sober and stay sober is small, and a lot of them probably didn't have a problem in the first place.

Some of the regulars were dock workers who worked overnight and would head to that bar after work, at the crack of dawn.
We'd walk by on our way to get bagels and coffee, and you'd see them in there knocking back 7 am after-work brews. We went a few times. It was nice enough, dark and subdued, a little dated. She was friendly with several of the regulars she got to know around the neighborhood. |
