Seems like one of the worst existences possible in the US. Poverty , proles, nothing to do, drug problems, shit weather, California taxes. If you just want to be remote and away from everyone else then at least pick somewhere hospitable

you make a lot of good points but if you choose the high desert the weather is warm to very hot for part of the year but nearly every night year-round the temps plummet. even in summer.

meth and fentanyl as huge problems, as you say.

It's pretty gnarly. Did an RV out of Vegas through Death Valley last month at 113 degrees. A couple days isn't too bad but living there seems like it would be tough. Was much better up north after Big Pine, Bishop and around Mammoth and East Yosemite.
