Macabre had a shitty timeslot and short set. They wasted too much time introducing their songs and ended up getting cut off. Talked to a dad later that night who brought his 18 yo dotter, and he said it was just too much to be hearing background about real serial killer shit while hanging with his kid. Every song had somebody dressed up like Dahmer, Bundy, Zodiac, etc.
Blood Incantation may have been the hidden gem of the whole festival. Their set fucking ripped. Highly recommend.
Fear Factory returned with their new singer and a fill-in drummer. People didn't seem to care. Sounded pretty good. Weird to have sunlight streaming into the room while they played.
Black Dahlia Murder tore the place apart and may have had the 2nd wildest crowd. People seem relieved that the singer killing himself didn't end the band. Saw this chick during their set: https://ibb.co/H24PN28 She got ragdolled pretty good on the edge of the pit, but didn't let it ruin her day.
Shadows Fall were a big announcement for a lot of people, but their sound was kinda mediocre. I probably saw Brian and Jonathan the most out of anybody throughout the weekend, just hanging out. Jonathan fucking SHREDS.
Obituary were fantastic and played like 30 minutes over their allotted time because they closed out that stage. Played a good mix of shit from the catalog. New stuff sounds good.
Suicidal Tendencies talked too much and stretched out their songs unnecessarily. They had a bunch of people and kids up on their stage which was retarded. I've seen great shows by them, but this wasn't it.
Anthrax absolutely killed it and put on the best performance I've ever seen from them. Their sound was incredible, Joey Belladonna's voice was honestly like a 25 yo's, and as a special little bonus, Derek Roddy from Malevolent Creation filled in on drums for Charlie Benante. He killed it. Robb Flynn's gay ass came out to play I AM THE LAW with the band. Best headliner of the festival.
After the show, chilled out with one of the girls previously mentioned and some other people from day 1. This hardcore dude from Chicago got gakked out on blow with some roadies after he came up empty-handed on Friday night. I told him about a stripclub nearby and I think he struck oil there. Dudes from Shadows Fall, Macabre, Allegaeon, and Vio-Lence in the house.
***Sunday***
Started the day with a band I was looking forward to quite a bit - High Command. They played the small stage and drew a great crowd. Lots of stage diving and a solid pit. Good mix done by the guys on the board, sounded great. Really hope they get on some good tours and grow their base.
Molder is a young upstart traditional death metal band from Joliet "Joilet" Illinois. They're great, but their sound was piss for like the first 1/3...which was a bummer. Also played the small stage and had a good crowd, which was awesome to see.
Caught a bit of Bodysnatcher, which had a large crowd of younger fans. They're like some slam/deathcore shit that seems pretty indistinguishable from the rest of the bands of that genre. Lots of cuties with the obligatory nose ring.
Next was another shocker and total treat - Angelus Apatrida from Spain. A modern thrash band that blew me away. Great sound, great guitarwork, amazing. Definitely worth checking out for any fans of stuff like Heathen, Flotsam and Jetsom, or Death Angel. A++.
Fucking GATECREEPER played the most BRUTAL set and had the most violent crowd of the weekend. And they sounded absolutely KILLER. Vintage buzzsaw Florida death metal. I can't even say more than that.
Cephalic Carnage were a big sell for the technical proggy nerds in the house. I got to watch them from the rail with another chick I met Friday night. Their bassist is a fucking magician who also plays with Job for a Cowboy and played with Havok for 4 years (both from Colorado). Some of their songs have fucking saxophone in them, and the dude from Brain Tentacles played those parts for them. Never saw them before, so glad to check them of the list.
I skipped Machine Head because they suck. Full stop.
Lamb of God closed out the weekend and brought as much energy as you'd expect. Crowd was into it, but you could also tell that they had been going hard for 72 hours. Kind of a standard set, and I've come to learn that they don't stray very far outside their lane in these situations, which is kind of disappointing, but I get it. It's a festival set.
More of the same after the show, with the addition of Robb Flynn from Machine Head in the group. And then for the one and only time that weekend, some fucking wastoid burnout lost his shit cause some dude bumped his "old lady's" drink, which then ended up leading to her taking him back to the room where he turned on her and threw a lamp at her...come to find out late that night that they were staying around the corner from me, and came back to find him passed out in the hallway. He ended up locking his bitch out of the room, and he ranted and raved at her through the door. She went to the desk since she paid for the room and thought they would help her. They both ended up getting arrested and he was dragged out COPS-style. That was pretty sweet.
For the first time back in 20 years, I think it went off pretty well. I didn't hear much in the way of complaints, and I hope they were successful enough to bring it back next year.
