I think that fundamentally every tribe acts in their own self interest in a weird way. It's naive to assume that they don't. It's one of the odd tenets of liberalism that somehow civic pride in our system will erase tribal bonds. Sure some percentage of people don't care. But every group cares. I don't think ethnicity defines everybody but some members of every group are defined by it, define themselves by it, and sometimes those definitions take on prominent roles in how different groups relate to one another.
