Roberts is the only person left in America who holds on to the fantasy that the court is above the partisan fray, which is just preposterous with no filibuster of nominations to scotus. 20 year term limits for all federal judges would still allow a path for a career jurist if they are genuinely excellent but would avoid the stupidity of 35 year old circuit court judges, undermine the leftist push to pack the courts and thereby wildly escalate the partisan fighting over it, and would stop the stupidity of 86 year old scotus justices. Plus it would make the cadence of appointments much more predictable and sequential and would tamp down on the gross spectacle of both sides rooting for the other side’s oldest justice to die.
