Sometimes we had an old car, sometimes not. We didn't take vacations, eat out, or go to any kind of entertainment venue. We did receive a newspaper and had one TV (black and white - they never went to color) and one radio. No central heat and no air conditioning, though we did have a window fan. They had hospitalization insurance for a fee through work, but it didn't cover office visits, though in those days doctors were cheap and there wasn't much to be done anyway. There was a tiny pension, amounting to $100-200/month and they had minimal savings. By the time my mother died in 1984 she had accumulated $6000 in Series E bonds. Most of my friends were in the same position. The only exceptions were big farmers, doctors, lawlyers, and the occasional successful business person. That was life for the majority of working Americans. To them it was paradise after having gone through the depression and having spent a decade as sharecroppers living with no indoor plumbing or electricity, and using horses/mules or walking for transportation.
