Remember the 1992 Olympics? It was a huge cultural event in America. 1994 was such a big deal that Tonya Harding was willing to have Nancy Kerrigan taken out so she could get in. But something changed. Today, America barely pays attention to it. I was in line recently at an AT&T store and figure skating was on the TV. It was the first time I've watched it this year, other than maybe thay Lindsay Vonn clip.

Everyone in Amerikkka is beaten down and has tunnel vision. There’s no sense of national pride because everyday waking up in this country is torture.

Not sure about the numbers but the Olympics this year have been really fun to watch. The only issue is the time zone and the instant access to results. Makes it hard to watch “primetime” when you are already know the outcome.

too much access has watered the whole thing down. used to be a real must watch event, you could only watch it by following whatever NBC put on. prime time olympics programs were appointment viewing. Now you can stream whatever you want at any time so the whole thing seems less special. also, we don't really have a culture of everyone watching the same prime time tv events anymore. even as recently as the 90s, the world series would rival super bowl tv ratings. not anymore.

Same as the superbowl.

It’s two things, one is the “Bowling Alone” decline of neighborhood parties and get together that gave people an excuse to watch these boring broadcasts in the first place.

The other is that almost all popular culture was cooped by shitlibs so many have no interest in turning on the halftime smut show etc.

Have been abroad since it started but in Europe it’s on every TV and people seem very into it. Also ticket sales IIRC were pretty good. I booked months ago and trying to get just one ticket for my gf to some events is proving difficult. Murica needs to turn it on and WIN to piss off these faggy europoors though.

I was on vacation for the first few days and tried consuming it like NBC wants me to , just watching the nightly show and its so heavily edited and gay they show like 2 skiers complete runs. Then when I went back to normal life I'm on ipad and there are no clips on social media cause the IOC removes them so idk whats going on. I'm not gonna get a streaming app and watch skiing at 4 am live

another part of it is that the vast majority of America including whites outside of a few areas have never participated or even seen winter sports. this very much includes the vast majority of whites outside of the NE, California, and Upper Midwest

it is quite gay that this is the case. but it's true. this is prole nation man

Because Americans used to reflexively turn on the TV every night, and then they'd have 3 options, and the other 2 stations often showed reruns not to compete with the Olympics.

Now, people aren't even putting the TV on, and if they do, they're probably not instinctively putting on Peacock when they can watch literally 100,000 other shows

Probably the best answer.

Reminds me of an article from Lester Bangs about when Elvis died, where he basically says a common culture is eroding (this is 1977) and Elvis was one of the few cultural things everyone had an opinion on.

"We will continue to fragment in this manner, because solipsism holds all the cards at present; it is a king whose domain engulfs even Elvis’s. But I can guarantee you one thing: we will never again agree on anything as we agreed on Elvis. So I won’t bother saying good-bye to his corpse. I will say good-bye to you."

I actually realized the biggest reason is the tape delay coupled with the internet.

The past nights I was going to passively watch, but i already knew the quad god lost, the old bobsled chick won, and eileen gu, etc.

For the events not spoiled, Chuck Klosterman once did a good job explaining why live sports are so compelling, but a game you recorded is not - even if you manage to avoid knowing the score.

In live sports, there's a sense that the outcome of the game matters - and the world will somehow be different depending on who wins. But if you're watching something that occurred 8 hours ago, then obviously whatever happened that you're watching didn't really matter.

Another huge part of live sports is the element that something fantastic could happen at any time. A basketball player's leg could snap in half, the players could fight each other or fight fans, the power could go out, etc. But as Klosterman puts it, if you're watching something on tape, you know that nothing incredible happened because you haven't heard anything about it.

Great example of this is Lindsey Vonn - a huge element of all these winter sports is someone could crash and die. That happened to Vonn, and we all found out about it in our social feeds in 5 minutes.

So why am I tuning in to primetime NBC tonight? The media already told me all the interesting results. And due to the fact that i haven't seen anything about the other events, i can safely assume nothing intersting happens in them.
