Joey Buttafuoco first became infamous in May 1992 when his teenage lover, 17-year-old Amy Fisher, shot his wife Mary Jo in the face at the couple’s Long Island home. Fisher had accused Joey of an affair—which he later admitted to—while she was still a minor. Joey pleaded guilty to statutory rape in October 1993, receiving a six-month jail sentence (he served roughly four months), along with a fine and probation.

Following his release, Joey moved with Mary Jo to Southern California. His legal troubles didn’t end there: in 1995 he pleaded no contest to soliciting prostitution, and in 2004 he was convicted of auto insurance fraud—resulting in a year in jail and five years of probation. As part of the sentence, he was permanently barred from working in the California auto body industry. In 2005, ammunition was found at his home, which was a violation due to his felony record. He pleaded no contest in 2007 and served three months in Los Angeles County jail.

Joey’s personal life saw more changes. He divorced Mary Jo in 2003 and later married Evanka Franjko in 2005. Over the years, he made sporadic reappearances in the media—participating in Celebrity Boxing in 2002, appearing on shows like Judge Judy and Judge Pirro, and taking part in a televised “20/20” special in 2019 alongside his daughter Jessie and ex-wife Mary Jo.

As of recent years, Joey Buttafuoco is a middle-aged ex–auto body shop owner living in California. He appears to be focusing on moving past his troubled history, with an emphasis on personal development, therapy, and occasional involvement in media or creative projects, including a film about his earlier life.
