you get exactly $60k to spend every year. anything not spent by the end of the year does not roll over. you are not allowed to earn any more money through other means or receive money from anyone. you can spend no more than $60k every year.
what do you do with your life? how do you live?

Two approaches. Move to a low cost of living area, buy durable goods to set yourself up nicely before inflation fucks you too hard, and then coast. Work at something that builds your reputation with the community so that even though you’re not earning money, you have a stock of goodwill to draw on. I don’t think you could pull this off in even furthest West Virginia though. You’d have to leave the country.
Second approach. Go full bohemian poverty, buy a van and a mountain bike, upgrade both year over year, slide and let do. Hope you never get sick.

This number is too low to be interesting. With the 4% rule, you can basically draw down 4% of a pile of money every year without running out in usual market conditions (and even in bad conditions, minor adjustments are possible). 4% of 1.5 million is $60K. Everybody on XO except for the well known paupers can already do this and retain the option to earn more money. Make it $600K and it becomes a more interesting question.

this is a really dumb reading of the hypo that completely misses the point
it's not just that you have a stipend at that level, but also improving the financial status of yourself and your family is not an option. you don't have enough to splurge but aspiring to a lifestyle in which you can splurge is futile.
what do you do with your time under circumstances in which your financial future is both guaranteed and severely restricted to modesty.

No you're missing the point or you need to aim this at poor people. Everybody here already has a million and a half dollars so they could do this tomorrow if they wanted without any restrictions. If somebody has 1.5 million dollars and hasn't just retired and been happy to get $60K a year in perpetuity, then their revealed preference is that they prefer not to do this.

that is precisely my point you dunce. most people here could choose this life if they want and most demonstrably do not, most likely either because they do not see this level of spending as sufficient for them and their families, or because they think they'd be bored without a vocation and might as well spend their time working to increase their spending power, at least without the anxiety of financial necessity. or more likely some combination of those two.
(...to say nothing of the fact that the hypo eliminates all financial risk and uncertainty around investments, but the above is more important for getting at the heart of the hypo).
the point of the hypo is that, despite having achieved a baseline level of financial freedom, they cannot choose to fill any of their time with financial / material aspirations at all. even if they choose to "work" it must be for something else entirely. for example they cannot default to "my job is my vocation and i don't really need it anymore but i can do it in a more chill, less stressful way and still earn some $ and have some purpose, i'd be bored at home all the time anyways." i am curious what people would do under those circumstances, what would get them up in the morning. i'm not asking them to fantasize about what they'd do if they were rich.
