By this time, the value of college was already greatly diminished and you had a lot of people seeking refuge from the economy (this is actually the same phenomenon that happened in the 1970s, although arguably Boomers wound up in a better position). By the time 2008 came around, that was a really deep recession, but I'm pretty certain that that really destroyed Gen Xers more than anyone else. If you bought your house at the top of the market in 2006 and then lost your job in 2008 and got foreclosed upon, then that would have been very bad. The other thing was that the fear was very real and a lot of people thought everything was ended. Young people for the most part didn't face that kind of stress because if the world was ending, it was ending, they didn't lose nearly as much when the market tanked, and they could invest in it on the way back up. Now they are doing quite well. Kids that are coming out of college today I don't think are fucked either because I think advancements in AI are going to really propel them into the future. I think it may be that Gen X and Millennials continue to get fucked but Zoomers and Alphas really excel in the next 30 years. |
