Over the past few years, I've strayed from this great place. Lots of things have happened in my life that took my attention away from here. The way I've neglected this site is almost criminal, (although this is not to be construed as an admission of guilt :/ ), and I'm sorry about that. I've tried to protect the site the best I could from outside freaks waging all sorts of threats and lawsuits against us, but I haven't taken the site into the future like I should have. My proactive energy hasn't been there, only my reactive.
Lately, I came to the conclusion that I really don't like the business I've built in the real world. I frankly prefer working alone behind a computer screen, without having to worry about acting or dressing to protocol. I hate the structure. So now I'm looking for a way of getting out of the suit world and back to where I'm comfortable. I miss the freedom my life on the Internet gave me, and I want it back. I'll have to figure out a way to earn money online, and whether that means making a success of this place or not is up to me. But it definitely means I'm going to have to get serious about adopting a vision and a strategy for the future, and before any of that, do some major housecleaning.
So, to get started, I've decided that I'm going to begin making some changes around here. The first is rather basic, yet important: speed.
It looks like making constant inputs in realtime into a database with 10,000,000+ posts isn't exactly good for load times. So, I've swapped out the old database for a new one (and I've kept logins intact). The old data is safe, and I'll be placing it all up for archived viewing purposes soon. But I think that starting fresh will be a good thing for everyone.
I hope this is okay with everyone, and that you enjoy the speed. I'm also going to appoint moderators to delete the spam that's being sponsored in part by friends at another message board, so stay tuned.
In trying to build a new section, I think it's for the best that the content be kept relevant. If you want to post off-topic, please keep it related to business, finance, etc. Otherwise, I think I'm going to have to keep the forum clean and delete other off-topic threads.
I know I do. I've been told I should sleep with her to put her in her place. That that would somehow give her a sense of who's the boss. But I don't want to take away the girl's virginity when she comes from a family that's obviously backward, and depending on what the future may hold for her, that virginity could be very important for her family's social status, as well as her own relationship with them. She doesn't realize HOW MUCH I THINK ABOUT HER, and how any other guy would insist on sex after all this time.
Lol, like I owe it to anyone to document my whopping $2 a day income from Yahoo. Maybe I should document my $350/mo server losses for the past 2 1/2 years instead?
I would never discuss my sexual relationships with the board. It would be improper to expose a woman's privacy to the public like that. Maybe bel talks about these things, but like a lot of girls, she's not going to tell the truth. I realize this is a running joke, but it's a bit misguided.
Bel doesn't have any information about alts. Apparently Colby hasn't been here for long enough to know that I'm religious about keeping poster info private.
Changing this place too much is a bad idea. I came to that conclusion a long time ago. Also, people are not exactly keen on advertising their love for this place to their friends.
Maybe I should be calling it an alpha, since it doesn't completely work yet. But most of the functionality is there. I just need a little bit more time.
I've been experimenting with fonts, layouts, and I'm not nearly done. I'm not thrilled with many of the fonts but that's why it's a work in progress. I'm looking for as much input as I can get on this - I don't want to convert the site over to anything new until the vast majority is really happy with the finished product.
Before you go check it out, keep in mind that I've warned you of how incomplete it is. It's very flawed and needs more work. So don't worry, this won't be half-assed, and it will be an all-around improvement. Again, I'm NOT in love with the fonts, graphics, anything, it's just a starting point.
Some things I've done / am working on:
Inline posting within threads - no more separate screens when you want to make a post.
Quick access to a sign in box, registration, and options. No separate screens.
Making threads as easy as possible to read by experimenting with fonts.
Getting the site out of the old table layout
Posting features, like rating and bookmarking threads, and other ideas. If any of these ideas are duds, I won't develop them - I think we should talk about them though, because I'm sure there are at least some that could be fun and worthwhile.
After this is completed, I want to make the mobile optimized site, once and for all.
I have it running on another domain, so we can test any features or develop it as much as we want before launching. Critics, please don't be too harsh!!
Figured I'd ask. Just need a room. I would pay a fair rent and be a quiet and courteous temporary tenant. My plans fell through and I'm stuck out here without anywhere to stay for 3 weeks.
As part of this grand overhaul I realize we're going to need people on board who can produce quality content for featured articles and other content (YouTube, even). Obviously law and grad school are key points of interest, but we should have a range of content in the spirit of the culture here. We should cultivate a witty, intelligent crowd that reflects the educated in our generation and the challenges they face, e.g. Not being able to find a job in spite of having impressive degrees, being cuckolded by an Asian male, being 5'5", etc. Even creative stuff is welcome. It's an open book and I think we can put this place on the map.
I would be happy to share revenues with top contributors, too, if we can ever get ads back here. I suspect we will because the #1 reason ad companies passed was that they don't really like to put ads on message boards, and we'll be more than that. I think great content is the key to attracting new faces, too.
So let me know if you or anyone you know are interested and what you could see contributing. If you want, you can just email me at halawaddin at gmail.
My "career" definitely did not blow up. I sold my business for $530,000 2 years ago. I've been trying to figure out what direction I want to go in and I've been making different investments in the meantime, which have taught me a lot. The Kramer comparison is kind of apt, though, if only because I'm not a careerist and I like an element of randomness in my life.
1. He admits he can definitely see the last several hundred IPs from Statcounter, but it purges them after 1000 or something and it's just that it moves "too fast" so that there's no log and he generally doesn't look.
2. He admits he can "turn it on" when there are mega-spamemrs on the board. That's why you can get a "you lose" if you try posting under a blocked IP via proxy.
We just have to trust him that (a) he hasn't activated the pricier long-term IP storing on Statcounter, and (b) he hasn't turned on IPs internally and left them on.
