A Simple Plan - 1998 - Sam Raimi - 5/5 - loved the locations they filmed this in

High and Low - 1963 - Akira Kurosawa - 5/5 - Masterpiece crime procedural

Paths of Glory - 1957 - Stanley Kubrick - 4.5/5 - Sad!

Parasite - 2019 - Bong Joon Ho - 4.5/5 - Beautiful cinematography. Ending was a letdown

CODA - 2021 - Sian Heder - 4.5/5 - Actually made me cry

Chilly Scenes of Winter - 1979 - Joan Micklin Silver - 4/5 - cool small little film about loving a woman way more than she loves you. Filmed on location in Salt Lake City in a dreary winter

The Silence of the Lambs - 1991 - Jonathan Demme - 4/5 - had never seen this all the way through. It was pretty good. But I knew all the beats pretty much

Seven Samurai - 1954 - Akira Kurosawa - 4/5 - overrated IMO I couldn't tell the characters apart either

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie - 2025 - Matt Johnson - 4/5 - Never saw the show or web series this was based on but this was pretty funny and charming on its own

Tony - 2026 - Matt Johnson - 4/5 - Better than I thought it would be

The Weight - 2026 - Padraic McKinley - 3.5/5 - Wanted to like this more but it loses points for being set in Oregon but filmed in Germany, and the 3rd act was unsatisfying and rushed

The Damned United - 2009 - Tom Hooper - 3.5/5 - well made but basically fictional story made by a deranged Huddersfield fan

Breathless - 1960 - Jean-Luc Godard - 3.5/5 - Kinda cool I guess idk who cares. Overrated film IMO

The Love That Remains - 2025 - Hlynur Palmason - 3.5/5 - weird icelandic film but If this guy director write an ending he'd be one of the best directors of all time

Trading Places - 1983 - John Landis - 3.5/5 - kind of a slog tbh

Days of Thunder - 1990 - Tony Scott - 3.5/5 - top gun with cars

TAR - 2022 - Todd Field - 3/5 - had to read the plot summary on wikipedia ro even understand what this was about.

Akira - 1988 - Katsuhiro Otomo - 3/5 - Cool animation but inscrutable story

Nomadland - 2020 - Chloe Zhao - 3/5 - Tries too hard to be profound and kinda Soulless and chinky

Mission: Impossible II - 2000 - John Woo - 3/5 - tedious

Tuner - 2025 - Daniel Roher - 3/5 - Good well-made, and grounded film ruined by an atrocious final 20 minutes

Best in Show - 2000 - Christopher Guest - 2/5 - not very funny

The Rip - 2026 - Joe Carnahan - 2/5 - Bad script and the worst lighting I have ever seen. streaming slop for ethnic people

La Gradiva - 2026 - Marine Atlan - 0.5/5 - Gay French film about a high school homosexual

Leave No Trace - 2018 - Debra Granik - 0.5/5 - More detached anthropological gaze directed at white proles from the Jewish director of the horrendous "Winter's Bone". Oh so "unblinkingly honest"! I'm so urbane! Utter trash.

Happyend - 2024 - Neo Sora - 0.5/5 - Really shitty leftist Japanese film with a retarded story

I watched "Tuner" last night and its mediocrity highlights how bad film has become with 94% on RT. It's completely formulaic, paint by numbers with multiple deus ex machinas working in parallel that ruin the masterful opening.

One of the only negative reviews put it perfectly that this was a calling card movie for the director to get attention from studios as a workmanlike operator vs flashy avant garde shit (eg that abomination with Anne Hathaway "Mother Mary" which was also 90% somehow but at least original).

The main character makes a dozen idiotic decisions in a row that prevent the ending from meaning anything. It's like a bunch of random coincidental shit happened, on top of horrific decision making, but none of it ultimately meant anything life-altering to anyone involved.

Yeah I felt pretty negative about it afterward, the story ended up retarded. But it had elements of a better film. Some of the cinematography was good. The director is a dorky canadian jew

it captures the essence of Philly better than Rocky does. we've had threads about movies that best represent each city, like mighty ducks for minneapolis or scarface for miami. subjectively I would put TP above Rocky for Philly

keep meaning to watch Tuner, but haven't.

tried watching Trading Places recently for the first time in years. not as good as i remembered it. has high peaks but a lot of valleys.

hated Tony. let's make a movie about that famous chef and television personality. but let's make it about some other boring part of his life no one cares about - him failing to get a scholarship and struggling to get laid as a teenager.

The "boring part of his life" is heavily featured in multiple episodes of season 1 of "A Cook's Tour". He literally attributes that RI townie experience as the most formative part of his entire life/career as a writer and chef.

maybe it was important to him, but even distilled to pure highlights there is nothing at all interesting to make a movie about.

Thought Tony was fine. Pretty run of the mill lost young man coming of age movie. Good 70s visual aesthetic, and a solid summer date movie.
