Collateralized loan obligations i.e. a pool of floating rate junk business loans that is tranched, with the AAA tranche being the least risky. Some examples are JAAA or ICLO.

You should always have 20k in savings minimum. I wouldn't invest anything until I had 50k in the bank for example.

i tried to explain this to my mom and she wouldn't have it. she put $500k in a callable CD at her bank. i also explained to her that brokerage accounts are insured up to $500k, while her bank was $250k. so fucking stupid.

I like and use SGOV, but to be clear it still doesn’t have the exact same liquidity as cash. You have to sell it and wait for a settlement period in some brokerages, so you might have to wait a business day or two to get your money.

Unless you do a lot of business in cash what does it matter? You can put most sudden expenses on credit cards.

Your brokerage doesn't give you instant trading credit on sales? Also settlement is now T+1.

I guess not. I use Fidelity.

I end up keeping a little cash in my money market, which also has a great yield. The downside of the MM is that the interest is not exempt from state tax. My state requires a certain minimum percentage of US treasuries for the interest to be tax exempt and none of Fidelity’s core positions for MM meet the threshold.

You can toggle some setting in your fidelity acct to put uninvested cash into SPAXX but have it be immediately investible.

That’s what I’m talking about in my second paragraph.

SPAXX has good yield but US treasuries aren’t a high enough percentage of their holdings, so I still have to pay state tax on the interest.

How much interest are you earning on it and what are your monthly expenses?

I keep 1-2 months expenses in checking earning no interest and about 4 months expenses in a "cash plus" account that is currently earning 3.65%.

no. what is it costing you to have $20K instead of $10K? a few bucks a month in interest?

i always keep a cushion of cash i can use on a few minutes notice at 3am just in case. comes in handy once in a while.
