Americans have always had a pioneer, frontiersman spirit. Football channels the aggression and force you sometimes need in this environment. As opposed to Eurodorks who want to pretend to be sophisticated by being vaguely effeminate and playing 'dignified' sports like soccer.

it's the ideal weekend get-together / television sport, dramatic in its (pretense of) violence, and cuts across demographics in its appeal because the game can be watched in very different ways. white iowans like the team / toughness aspect, urban blacks like the athleticism, "cerebral" people appreciate the strategy, etc.
besides the accumulated history.

Yeah,
It has the right rhythm to be communal.
Friday, town/high school orients around a game.
Saturday, state/university orients around a game.
Sunday, metro areas/ where you go after college orients around a game.
Helps that it happens in the fall when you want to somewhat artificially forge new academic communities. It’s ideal for (this is going to be the social event this weekend)

A big part of it is that it looks the best on TV. They figured it out in the 70s how to film it to look compelling and it took off.
They also aren't shy about tweaking the rules to make it better for TV. Contrast that iwth baseball which took like 20 years to realize no one wants fucking 4 hour games watching people step in and ou to fhte box.

Football gets the eyeballs because, as a country, we are mostly stupid.
Baseball is the most “American” sport and is the most prestigious. HTH.

Bro, if the pinnacle of the sport is in the American South, it isn’t prestigious.

This is a very recent phenomenon. Historically, the major American cities were the hotbeds. They still are from a viewership and cultural perspective.

This is categorically false. No sport can be that complex if Ole Miss is able to be competitive in it. Baseball has plenty of strategy as does basketball. Football wants you to believe it’s multivariate calculus and then you see the moron that coaches the Lions get interviewed and realize it can’t possibly be that complex. Lee Corso did this for a living. Be serious, please.

Counterpoint- the head coaches are regularly 100 iq types and the vast majority of teams are in set plays literally every play.

TV thing upthread is CR, but it’s also that the pacing is the best of all the major sports. It has plenty of breaks and downtime that facilitates hanging out with your friends and catching up and/or obsessing about the game. But it also has usually at least 10 or so exciting and important plays that reward the audience’s attention span. Cf basketball which is basically just waiting to see if it’s close in the last 5 min of the 4th and everything before that can be understood as a stream of various feats of athleticism but with often little consequence to the outcome, which is usually a question of which team got more boring/easy baskets. Baseball, which regularly bores the shit out of viewers for 2+ hours at a time. Soccer which does the same and regularly ends in 0-0 ties. Closest major sport is hockey, but hockey doesn’t have the same level of aesthetics because it’s so flat and back and forth, and though it’s less likely to be boring it can be a snooze for over an hour, and that basically never happens in football with modern offenses.
Also culturally it dominates because it selects for Chads and that has really significant impact on eg high school social heriarchies and in that way it has a central cultural significance far beyond sports that other sports don’t. It’s a war metaphor game, too, so the entire Friday Night Lights schtick is that all of society sees value in glamorizing our most Chadly teen boys. The number of 6’-6’3” 215-245 lb guys of various races who can run a 4.5-4.7 40 and bench 225 15+ times is pretty wild. Like we produce hundreds of them every year and a bunch play D3 or walk on because they’re 2” shorter, slightly slower or 15 lbs lighter. We are intimidating to other cultures because of this and eg Euros openly discuss it in a hilariously defensive and self-conscious way.

I love football but the PACING is 120. Just like everything else in amerikkka that sucks but is good for profits, GC has convinced consumers it’s actually to their benefit. The games would be much better without so many fucking stoppages.

Theories:
- looking good on TV is important but I don’t think that’s unique to football. I think baseball looks good on TV. Nowadays all sports do.
- the gameplay itself is the big reason IMO. The games popularity has correlated with 2 things- TV and the evolution of the forward pass. Because at any time you can make up yuge chunks of yardage through the passing game it’s exciting. It’s aesthetically nice to look at. It’s unique to football. High risk high reward, drama, etc
- violence - another relatively unique football thing. Big hits, big risk. On its own not enough, as football was always very violent even when it was a niche sport. But esp when paired with QB who drops back and receivers who expose themselves to make big catches it adds to drama.
- the importance of the QB. No other team sport is so dependent on having a “main guy” so it is very personality focused. Even compared to the NBA which is usually seen as a star dominated league - if you have a good QB in the NFL you can always win, even if your defense is mid , oline is mid, etc. if you don’t have a good QB it’s extremely tough to do anything.
- scarcity effect - one game a week, lots of hype / storyline build up . Only 16 games in a season so each game feels pretty meaningful. There is no dead part of the season like you have with NBA and MLB
- timing of season means games coincide with major family rituals like Thanksgiving , Christmas. People have the TV on to football.
- parity - even places like KC, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, can produce league defining pillar of the league type teams.
