It’s an increase in the money supply. They sent people like $12,000k per family in 2020-2021. This is a huge deal because the average American makes like $27k.

They measure it in shitty inefficient ways by looking at Prices and cooking the books on real estate

the amount they paid out was around $800b, and the money supply increased by $3.5 trillion; the overwhelming majority of the inflation was due not to payments but to electronic fiat to banks.

We had electronic fiat to banks from 2008-2020 and it was nbd. It was “supply chain issues” distorting prices, combined with overstimulus that caused high CPI #s.

And the way inflation is measured is retarded, huge increases in bank reserves don’t “count” but the price of a Basket of Goods does, it’s just BS.

Yes, my point was that the overstimulus occurred largely through massive electronic fiat, not as the result of individual payments.

if you think about it, resources in the world are mapped to units of money: for example, a big mac costs $5 or whatever.

if the government prints a ton of money, there is more money in the world sloshing around.

given that there is more money out in the world, there is more capacity for people to bid up the price of desirable assets and resources, so all this stuff now costs more in monetary units.

The simplest explanation is too much money chasing too few goods. If the government increases the money supply too much (by keeping interest rates too low or excessive stimulus), that will drive inflation. But inflation can also occur due to supply shocks (see the inflation crisis in the 1970's due to the Arab Oil Embargo).

i have been told by very smart people that inflation is caused by a limited regional war on the other side of the planet between two countries from which we import almost no goods.

It's also psychological and self-perpetuating.

People after COVID end up with more moeny in their pocket. They all try to buy teh same goods, so prices go up. Some of those goods are used to make other things, so those prices go up. Workers can't afford goods anymore, so they demand more wages. Company agrees, so they pay more wages - but now they have to charge more to recoup the pay increase. And it keeps spiraling...

The money supply exceeds economic growth so sellers of goods expect to fetch higher prices for a similar quantity of goods/services. If that quantity were larger, the sellers would be under more pressure to compete for the money buyers had and would lower prices to attract buyers.
