the impression that you get from reviews and the fanbase is that it's Sharknado tier dreck

What’s interesting about it was it shows there was a time after SW got popular but before it got “holy,” so to speak. The Xmas special was typical dumb 70s variety show dreck, no better or worse than similar programming of the era. It only seemed offensive somehow after we started taking SW so seriously and worrying about its canon and whatnot.

yeah true and sci fi originals from that era were all pretty fun. they only started getting lame after the "Syfy" rebrand//marketers trying to capitalize on the fandom for these things with phony OK cola irony "we're cool too" etc. the original sharknado was on the cusp of that era's advent

this was 2005 but i remembered this existed during dinner one night and began chuckling to myself for the rest of the meal: "Attack of the Sabertooth" https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0443334/ 180 B movie

the sci fi originals are actually really hard to find now, at least as of the last time i looked for safe download options. i wish i would've burnt more of them to disc

it's really no different from the muppets special or the carpenters special from the same era. the lawrence welk specials have aged well, though. he knew that his type of music was out of style by then, and he did not give a fuck, nor did he make any concessions to modernity. he just kept featuring vocal groups and trumpeters and so on and did not even pretend to change his sound, critics or ratings be absolutely damned to every hell.

got into lawrence welk reruns this last year and found him to be quite the accordion expert and a charismatic showman to boot

folkish stuff like polka can't really ever be "dated" anyway. in germany much of the non-urban CDU base tunes into polka/folk/waltz lawrence welk type programs on the regular; was surprised to see there was such a wide following for it

the muppets specials (that i've seen) are all high quality and just as funny today as they were ten years ago or probably fourty years ago as well. that show and jim henson's stuff in general has aged extremely well
