Part of it could be religious beliefs. So for devout Christians there is certainly a understandable reason to care about future generations and their belief in Christ for example.

they're saying that human beings cannot, physiologically, care about abstractions or persons who they do not have personal relationships with in the same way that they care about persons who they have personal relationships with. i agree with them that this is true

to the extent that anyone "cares" about persons or abstractions or 'society,' that "care" is an intellectual phenomenon, not an emotional and instinctive one. yeah, i do care to some extent about the future of 'society.' yeah, i do care about some person i've never met whose suffering is profiled in some human-interest story i read about in a newspaper. but i don't care about them in the same qualitative or quantitative way that i care about my family members or my friends. i can't. my brain doesn't work that way. nobody's brain does

once you recognize that any "caring" about persons/things outside of one's dunbar number is a purely intellectual phenomenon, you realize (hopefully) that anybody who is not intelligent and self-aware enough to intellectualize things on this level *does not* actually "care" about any of these people/things, period. this is why stuff like the "NPC" meme speaks to people so strongly. there really is a fundamental difference between "NPCs" who *literally* cannot and do not care about 'society' in the abstract and people who are actually smart enough, self-aware enough, and honest enough to have coherent, reasonably deep opinions about it

needless to say, it follows that people in the former category should absolutely not be "voting" and we should absolutely not have "democracy," mass literacy, etc
