it seems like stuff like Khan Academy has been a success. there have been a few bright spots with that approach but there are tons of downsides as well

well I inherently don’t like people in DC having too much power and spending are money, so yes
besides leas ideological pollution, I think decentralization would encourage states to pursue educational strategies that match their local economies instead of this sookoe cutter approach of everyone getting worthless degrees. mainstreaming college has been a massive disaster for most people

Their only real responsibility is student loans, which has been a disaster for the country. If they just transfer the student loan wing to another department, then it’s a dumb paper shuffling exercise. If they cut student loans, then definitely worth it.
DoEd could have been a great branch, but look at the results. American students, myself included, are ignorant, poorly educated rubes.

won't this indirectly set a commercial tone for curriculum then? what we're seeing with the current approach to staffing is the weaknesses of putting private sector people in specialized public positions imo
in older times billionaires put out generous endowments for people heading into public policy and the liberal arts, but this doesn't seem to be as much the paradigm of today

SAVE was killed by the courts. PAYE is currently suspended, too. the only question is whether SAVEmos will be punted over to the old IBR plan, or if they will be sent directly to standard repayment.

We need to end government involvement in student loans which has been a complete disaster and has driven tuition prices to ridiculous levels. The whole idea of spending huge sums of money for college and going into debt for it has got to change.
Truly talented people can always get private loans if they want to, based on test scores, quality of the degree, etc for the rare cases it makes sense.

Student loans were implemented in the most retarded way possible and clearly cause universities to bloat.
Lenders should be able to adjust rates based in student potential. A stem major going to MIT shouldn’t pay the same rates as someone getting a gender studies degree from a directional state university.
Also it is preposterous that colleges refuse to become more efficient in the information era. With the Internet, AI, video recording, etc., these schools should be serving much greater populations for less money. There should still be an in-person opportunity to go to Harvard, but they need to push online extension school as a less costly and less prestigious (but equally viable) option. We also need a post-SAT aptitude test where young job applicants can be better benchmarked against each other.

lol @ thinking the 1000s of 'workers' in the doe did anything that had a positive effect on edu outcomes
it's going to be just like twitter, fire nearly all the staff and barely anything misses a beat. i guarantee 95%++ of people (formerly) employed by the 'doe' had make work / no-show jobs.

I recall a year ago when cons were all up in arms about the Department of Education. This isn’t a new issue they just decided to go along with because Trump did it, not at all
