Eg Amazon is much more of a sweatshop (albeit with many exceptions and graded against other inhouse jobs, not biglaw) while Apple generally pays less and is less stressful (again with many caveats), and Facebook is purportedly the best QoL overall (though people say that a lot less than they did 5 years ago). MSFT and Netflix are also different in many ways. The only Google person I know left years ago but they liked it for 10+ years until they topped out in terms of progression/promotions, though I gather it’s a completely different vibe there now than it was for 20+ years prior to 2022/23 or so.
To get any useful info you need to speak to someone at the company currently who knows the team/manager where you would be working. |

I was interviewing and they changed the department structure twice during the 3 months I was going back and forth to HQ for meetings with this team or that team. When they switched it again i said I'm fine without the job and walked away after like 9 rounds and 9 months. |

To get the SVP $250k+ you need to do some soul destroying boot licking - at least in the places I've seen. That's why I'm getting out and going back to private practice and starting my own thing. I can't stand to have a boss anymore. At least at a law firm, the psychopaths are at least intelligent on some level.
The more some EVP in marketing or People Learning exec makes terrible decisions the more you have to be buddy buddy with them, at least in house. With lawyers you can say what the actual fuck. You say fuck around the EVP, your career is toast and you're on an offenders list. Sometimes I can't believe employees actually go to HR to complain about other employees - like theyre still in grade school. But that's the thing. Most people can't really function without the school-type structure. Some people really love it.
I've been on chill street for longer than I should have because of visas and shit. Now that that's sorted, I'd rather fend for myself than ask someone else for a small tiny sliver of the value of the profit I'm actually driving for someone else's company.
Will say, though, if you have kids, in-house is a dream. Completely changes your priorities and you'll learn to tune the silly EVP out, clock-in, clock-out and spend more time with the kids. |

And the other thing is that unlike BIGLAW where you will have some level of autonomy to just do your work, at a lot of those places its super structured and you not only have a lot of work to be on top of but you have people supervising you and questioning your every move. None of these places will provide you a more chill lifestyle. At least not substantially more chill. Your chillest option would be to see if you can become a part time partner or of counsel at your current firm. |

Comp will be 250-400k depending on level. Going above that (to director) was difficult before and is now near impossible because everyone in those roles is relatively young and headcount growth is mostly flat. When a role does open up you will compete with biglaw partners and everyone else internally for them.
Some companies have law firm hours (Amazon, Netflix). Those companies plus Meta and a few others also deliberately churn through 10-15% of their non-management employee base each year so there is an element of perpetual uncertainty at some of these places. This is on top of routine layoffs and reorganizations that have taken place in the past couple years.
Google is probably the best of the mega companies by a fair margin to work for when you factor in all of the above (comp, hours, stability, etc.), even considering their recent downsizing. |
