the c-level officer who runs her division came into his role from outside the company 6 months ago, and announced a "reduction in force" meaning they fired 70 people out of about 4500 in the division, which amounts to 1.5%.

it's cryptic why, but it seems to my wife that the new c-level officer is just cleaning house and getting rid of some real dead weight. he's been doing some other org changes too.

there wasn't a company level firing, and the head said he wasn't asked to do this by the CEO. he said it's his own decision and he's trying to optimize.

seems relatively innocuous to me, but people under my wife are freaking the fuck out.

i guess they hear all the other shit in the media about amazon and ups firing 10% of their workforce.

a lot of well-run, profitable, old-school companies do not do layoffs or RIFs and only fire specific individuals for poor performance. they take pride in never doing layoffs and providing long-term stability. stack ranking and firing the bottom 5 or 10% came out of jack welch at GE (along with a lot of other bullshit) and has been adopted at tech companies.

old school companies in more cyclical industries or facing secular decline do, of course, conduct layoffs. so if wife's company is relatively healthy and hasn't done layoffs in the past, it's a bad sign that the company is allowing its culture to change. so employees are justifiably freaking out.

the weird thing is that this is being called a RIF, when it seems to my wife and i that this is actually just shitcanning the very bottom of the barrel for poor performance. it's interesting that they're calling it a RIF. is there reason they wouldnt want to say we looked everyone and decided to get rid of the most useless 1.5% in this org? is that worse for morale than just saying it's a RIF and freaking everyone out?

the difficult thing is that if you try to do a stealth RIF over several months (e.g. fire 15 people per month for 5 months), that can freak people out too. everyone starts realizing people are being let go and everyone except the highest performers start to wonder, "am i next?" and that can FUCK morale.

ripping off the band-aid all at once is sometimes considered preferable.

i get the ripping off the band aid. why not just come out and say that we got rid of the bottom of the barrel?

if you read between the lines, it's pretty obvious that's the case. they didnt say this was random and we needed to fill a quota. they said they took a look at everything and decided this is a good way to optimize.

Layoffs come in waves or "rounds" a lot of the time. Since there is no science behind any of it, they just cut and then wait and see what happens, like if something Broke.

Remember after 9/11 when we thought they might do the Same Thing a month later? If we knew for a fact it would be one and done then it'd be less distressing.

Not uncommon to do a wave like this and see how many people take other job offers so they don’t have to force people into layoffs. Attrition models are currently messed up because people are clinging to sinecures.

but why would other people leave? first, there's nowhere to go; hard to get another f500 sinecure. second, what would this would make people think their job is in jeopardy? the c-level officer kept said they'll "continue to optimize" and "look for efficiencies" -- is that enough to scare everyone?

If your managers are so far out of touch that they do true layoffs like oh we just fired everyone hired in the last year or oh we cut 10% from areas where the whole team was performing and necessary and next year we’ll be hiring for the same roles - find a new job.

But yeah 1.5% is probably all low performers and some are so bad that the org runs better simply by removing them. Like junior guy who makes mistakes that require multiple people to fix, middle manager who pocket vetoes good ideas, demoralizes staff and wastes boss’s time, regional or divisional boss who is retired and still drawing a paycheck.

your last statement is apt. wife saw the list, and there's one mid/senior level boss on the list (it's vast majority low/mid level ICs) -- and it's an old guy who was planning on retiring soon anyway. probably heard this was coming and offered himself up as a good way for him to get severance.

in the corp world, there's all sorts of managers -- project managers, program managers, etc.
