The phenotype character of the Soviet government was a drastic change from even prior Russian governments; compare the faces of the Bolshevik political vanguard to the (mostly German back when German was a wider genetic tent) Romanovs and the class differences as expressed in phenotype are palpable to anyone with a familiarity with the physiognomies of Eastern Europe

The Romanovs had and surrounded themselves with long and sharp faced blood that looked East German/Prussian/of the Hansa with some native Uralic flavor. The Bolsheviks sans Lenin more often than not had sturdy and coarse faces more similar to those found east of the Urals (more Asiatic features) and with features native to central Russian or non-slavic but territorially Russian villages (Stalin, Molotov, Khrushchev, etc) or often bourgeois weedy and chinless urban Russian metropolitan sprawl (Beria, Radek, Trotsky, etc)

In Russia's case terror and disaster was inevitable, the late Romanov period actually was just that repressive and poorly governed, anywhere where nihilism becomes a real political force is probably doomed, but the expected period of violence and revolt could've ended up with a parliamentary monarchy or a different more ethnically Russian dynasty being enthroned instead of decades of the ideologically mongrelized Soviet

Russia's alternative history had the RSDP not devolved into the Bolshevik-Menshevik split and w/o the purge of its truly democratic elements or if the Russian Orthodox church had actually managed to seize political power would've been interesting

The ideological purges that came after, to shore up the unsteady Red position after the civil war was over, would've been the same shit under a different badge had the Whites won. This isn't an apologetic for Bolshevik conduct, which was objectively reprehensible; just pointing out the tragic and self-defeating nature of brothers' wars and the inevitability of what we consider to be war crimes in conflicts of that nature
