We are actually entering into a business cycle where it will be pretty easy to get new jobs. So you can just work for 2 years. Take 6 months off. Work for 2 years, take off 6 months.

Switching careers is also getting easier.

Maybe you won't be as high of an earner on this route, but after you save up a couple million and have it invested what you are making in salary matters less.

Just keep working, keep saving something (even $5/day), and doing your thing but not spending more than you make.

Never retire. You'll never run out of money on this plan.

I'm telling you though, this doesn't matter any more.

You're scared because a resume gap was basically a professional killer all the way up to about 2021. Now, nobody cares.

Actually, they used to say that for your resume you should only include about 15 years. I'd only include the last 5 years. Nobody cares about ancient history.

Also, just save up your first $3m or whatever and then who cares if you only make $80k as long as the job is good? Just find a good job and take it and live off of what you make and let your savings continue to grow. That's the way. Find a way to make it from day to day and enjoy your life. The actual dollar amount you're getting paid matters a lot less if you have $3m+ already saved/invested.

I make low seven figures. Switching to a path where I can make $80k literally costs me million and millions of dollars

Well are you making low 7 figures at an awesome job that you really like?

I have a miserable job and I make like 1/5th or less of what you make. It's a fucking joke. But on the other hand, I could get another job in like 6 weeks if I tried.

That would certainly scratch that weird little HR itch for no gaps. It's kind of brilliant too, because most people won't ask you about something like that. They'll just let it slide.

That's why you won't get asked about it.

I don't know that it gives a diversity boost. You have to be able to check a box for diversity. Just being a mom or a dad checks no boxes.

It's hard to onboard in a WFH setting for one thing.

Why not get a sinecure and just handle a reduced case load with your spare time? Apply some 80/20 to your life.

Sometimes that's a good thing, but sometimes you just can't find the will to work hard at something you hate.

I don't know the answer in that situation.
