The wave of Italian and Jewish immigration from 1890-1920 was severely corrosive to the social fabric of the US. That's why there was the backlash that stopped all immigration in the 20s.
Italians and Jews brought all sorts of scams and corrupt practices that spelled a massive blow against the US's high-trust society and it was never the same again. On the one hand you had the Mafia (Italian) and Murder Inc (Jewish), with a massive increase in murder rates during the Prohibition Era. On the other you had the rise of anarchist and demagogic leftist politics that destroyed the previous emphasis on freedom of contract and free enterprise in the US. Also unethical Jewish scammers taking over the American business world etc.
Italians and Jews didn't make America a shithole, but they did gradually but irrevocably dilute many of the aspects of the American character that had set it up for superpower status. Many effects took decades to reverberate. And it would've been a lot worse if the flow hadn't been cut off for a few decades so they could assimilate. |
