Okay maybe if you pay to run aerators all day long, only swim at night, and dump 50 lbs of ice in an hour before each use you can get some use out of it May through October, but otherwise not. Swimming pools are for a more temperate environment like Pennsylvania/Ohio and up.

It's not refreshing to jump into 90 degree water. It feels like your swimming in a vat of urine.

I know that people use their pools, especially people with young kids, but it's so much less than you would think. And the cost of building a pool is very high. I mean, $100k-$200k? And then the maintenance/electricity/insurance/supplies add-on works out to an ongoing $1k-$2k/mo. forever. The per use cost of having a pool at your house has got to be over $100 for most pool havers.

Isn't that the truth. I mean, let's just say you get back dollar for dollar what it cost to install (you won't, but let's just assume that). And let's assume your maintenance, electricity, insurance, supplies add on averages out to about $18,000 a year (which is not unlikely, maybe a little higher than what some people would pay, but I know around here it's at least that).

Now let's say you use your pool without fail, 3x per week for 26 weeks (nobody, and I mean nobody uses their pool that much).

That's $230.77/use.

Let's say you do everything yourself and your pool costs are only $12,000 per annum.

That's still $153.85/use.

You'd have to basically use your pool every day. Have your kids in there multiple times per day, always be in the spa, etc. to make it come out anywhere near worthwhile.

Outdoor swimming pools are nothing more than throwing money away on a hole in a ground and, in the southeastern United States, the outdoor swimming pool is an unusable oversized bath.

These numbers are complete and utter bullshit. I have a large pool and it's well under $100/month.

Electricity: up to $100 only if you have a single speed pump from 1974. As long as you have a variable speed pump, it's about $30/month.

Chemicals: salt system will last 5 years (warranted for 7 but more realistically will last 5 before needing cell replacement). $25/month

maintenance: about 30 minutes/week, mostly done while cooling off in the pool to begin with.

insurance: can't be adding more than $200/yr to my homeowners insurance

Conclusion: as always disco fries is a faggot fraud

You conspicuously omitted restorative maintenance like repairs to the pool deck, siding, internals, pumps, etc. Draining and redoing the surface of the pool is like $20,000+.

All your other numbers are fraud too.

Acknowledging that you're flaming, and admitting that I don't have a ton of experience operating pools, if my memory serves me correctly, when I rented the house in Scottsdale a few summers ago and it was like 105° out, the pool never got above like 80° or something and was always cold AF to get into.

Is it really that different in the humid Southeast?

It really is. In the desert you may have a 40 degree spread between day and night. Second, in the desert, when you get out of the pool, the water starts evaporating immediately and that makes you feel cool and refreshed.

In the southeast there is no evaporation.

Thread makes no sense. We had a pool in New England that my parents spent $200k on in 1999 dollars and we swam only 2-3 times a summer since it was always so cold. Just a pretty thing to look at mostly. In the south people swim all the time including in Florida.

The problem in Texas is the scorching sun. Pools make a lot of sense but they either need to be indoor or need to be covered. When it's a 100 degrees out, it's nice to be in the pool IF the sun isn't beating down on you.

You sound dumb. Even in Miami it's below 90 overnight. So the pool water is generally mid 80s in summer. They actually heat it in the winter because some people don't like it getting down to 70

My HOA has a private pool and it’s 180. Kids play with other kids they know. Water is usually 77-82 degrees. I see other neighbors I know there all the time and can have a beer with them.

Some of the neighbors/moms are pretty attractive and wear small swimsuits. They are likely at least mildly repulsed by my unmaintained thick back hair.

Our HOA has two pools. They are always raising dues on account of the cost of electricity, insurance, pool maintenance. I never even get over to the damn thing. It’s too hot to use anyway.

this is all tard trolling from xo's resident head tard in charge

but i haven't seen any comments about evaporation yet. even if pools did get up to bathtub temps (which they don't) being partially submerged and getting out is very pleasant even in the hottest of weather because of the effects of evaporative cooling when wet.

This whole evaporation thing doesn't happen too well when the humidity exceeds 80%

If you take a step back you see utter absurdity of the evaporation argument. He is literally saying the benefit of the pool is getting out of it.

It’s true. If it’s not refreshing to swim in, you’ll never take the jump in the first place, which means the sensation of drying off in the ambient air is a non-starter.

Also, my point about humidity stands. Try drying off in an 80%+ humidity steam bath environment sometime. It’s futile.

I'm filling up a 31x16' above ground prole pool right now. It's 13,000 gallons. It's taken me the better part of a month to get an area prepped for it. My yard is not level where I was looking to place it. I had to rent a bobcat and I had about 15 yards of sand dropped off. I built the base with posts built in to make a fence around the pool to protect it and hide how ugly it is. Eventually I'm putting a big deck off the back with a view of Puget Sound.

I have a ton of pictures of I ever get adventurous I'll post them.

Getting the base ready and hauling sand it was straight in the 90s every day. A week after it fills... basically fall.

I bought a propane heater but I wasn't planning on installing it this year. I need a big tank and a deck to put the propane accessories we have (stand up heater, fire ring and space heater). I also bought a robot for the bottom and I'm going to get a solar skimmer for the top. All in probably $6k and that's with me doing all the work.

This thread really hit home for me yesterday. I went to a friend's pool party in northwestern NJ. Their yard was surrounded by large trees and hills in the distance the water was brisk and refreshing. That rush of the cold water is essential to the enjoyment of a pool.

Compare that to soaking in water that's just as hot and wet as the dense 97 degree air surrounded by flat terrain and gross alligator infested waterways.

So here I am in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It's a scorching hot 90 degree day and of course my friend, who I stayed with for the day, insisted that we go to his community pool.

I was skeptical for all the reasons Ive stated ITT but nevertheless politely acquiesced.

My friend was excited for us to take a dip and even said "dude, it's like bath water" on our walk toward the pool as though this were a good thing.

Sure enough, my friend was right. There was no exhilaration or rush as my skin was met with brisk water. I just felt wet. Wet and hot. Not refreshed or rejuvenated. And when I got out, I stayed damp for hours.
