our kids' LL coach had a funny way of teaching parents that they should not be heard until their son's at-bat was over. at the parents' team meeting he'd have a Babe Ruth League kid pitch to a father who hadn't played baseball growing up and the coach would stand there with a bullhorn shouting at the dad "i really need you to get a hit for me. i need it. for me. please get a hit." of course the dad was floundering and the screaming was distracting. everyone got the joke and laughed and from that point on nearly all the parents kept quiet until their kid's at-bat was done. but there was always one or two parents screaming at their kids throughout the entire at-bat. |

that was one thing the coach would not tolerate. he was super firm that there would be no coaching from the stands and when it happened he made a point of stepping out and looking back at the parents' section. it happened maybe once per season in the first game or so, but not after that. the coach wasn't a prick about it so all the kids and parents liked him.
his suggestion was that if you needed to, you could say two words at the end of your kid's at-bat. the first word should be "nice" or "great." the second word should be a noun like "at-bat," "cut," "swing." but only two words. |
