Maybe I'm overreacting because of his Disastrous Irish phenotype, but he's always come across as a bumbling idiot across both series. He also often serves as the foil for a moral lesson with his simple-minded, unethical takes.
Further, while Keiko is obviously awful, I don't think she'd be like that if he weren't such a little bitch.
Don't get me wrong, he's a great character; I enjoy his constant misfortune and contentious marriage. Just saying he's TTT as a person.

Is he just filler? 2nd most appearances of any Star Trek character. It sounds though like you like to hate him. Maybe he's a worthy character even though he sucks as a person.
Edit:
Given how much you hate the characters on Seinfeld if he were a Seinfeld character would you still hate him or would he be an improvement over the canonical 4

180 ya he lives in space. I agree he's kind of milquetoast. I think they put him in so many episodes because he's inoffensive. And then because he's so boring the writers were probably like let's give him a dark side.
Who is the better Hapa space couple, Miles and Keiko or Chief and Sharon "Boomer" Valerii from BSG.
Honestly I think it's hilarious how shitty Miles and Keiko's relationship is, so I love them. I really enjoy every scene they're in. Is it supposed to be funny or is it intended sincerely as part of Miles' long-suffering shtick?

Don't want to doobs myself too much but long story short I met him randomly in public. I didn't know who he was but this turbo nerd I was with recognized him. He ended up talking to me about his divorce and what it was like to coparent his daughter with his ex wife. So random lol. Same guy who wrote BSG also wrote many episodes of TNG and DS9.
During his time on Deep Space Nine, he continued to write episodes that expanded on Klingon culture such as "The House of Quark", "Sons of Mogh", "Rules of Engagement", "Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places", "Soldiers of the Empire", "You Are Cordially Invited..." and "Once More Unto the Breach". He also wrote episodes that dealt with controversial subjects such as genetic engineering ("Doctor Bashir, I Presume?"), co-wrote the episode that featured Star Trek's first same-sex kiss ("Rejoined") and killed off another popular character, Vedek Bareil Antos ("Life Support").

I just watched a few clips of DS9. I realized how boring the show would be without the ever-present bleeps and bloops of the ship in the background of every dialog scene. The sound engineer who makes all those little ear wiggles is the real hero.
BSG is kind of a boring action show for the first two seasons and then in Season 3 it gets all political and in Season 4 it gets metaphysical and philosophical. I think the latter eps are my favorite. It sort of devolves into Neo-Platonism. Tp.

Do yourself a favor and only watch BSG through the end of the first season, then pretend it was cancelled. If you do that, it's the greatest SF series of all time.
I think that all the time about Sisko and you're right, it extends to other characters too. O'Brien just doesn't have much going for him in the first place imo.

I know, I'm just being silly/flippant with my responses. I think of zozo as a creative writing exercise to drum up drama for entertainment. I'm just trying to write good dialog.

I like that, immediately after the episode where he marries an Asian, we have an episode about how he is racist. Brave realism on the part of the TNG writers' room.
Lmao yeah and I like that he and ADOS Sisko are often the most racist people in the room in DS9. Sisko is more of a pragmatic race realist imo whereas O'Brien's a simple-minded tribalist traumatized by his personal experience.
Dude I just watched the mind prison one and he is sooooo awful. He handled prison horribly and also behaved even worse than one would expect when he "returned." It's understandable he'd be shitty after such a traumatic experience but wow. He even physically threatened his baby daughter.

It's funny how his character is simultaneously the most technically competent character, while also being the Dumb Normie Everyman character
It doesn't actually make any sense. They really overdo his "dumbness" and lack of civilized manners sometimes. It doesn't fit. The actor does a good job of communicating what the writers want; it's definitely the writers' fault
cr because when he has to perform some act of heroism and everything depends on him my immediate thought is, not this retard, then i have to remember oh yeah he's good at his job. hard to suspend disbelief

The patronizing/condescending attitude of the writers (and presumably Sophisticated, College-Educated Viewers) towards O'Brien just oozes through the Screen. It's less offensive or cringe than it is humorous. Like, it's just funny that this was the prevailing attitude among the self-conceived Sophisticated Class so recently in history
Today, O'Brien would be a q anon Drumpft-supporting prole who is simultaneously "racist" while also having a brown wife who he deeply adores and is a turbo-simp for. He would be constantly chided for Mansplaining things to Strong Female Characters who would swoop in to magically fix his awkwardly and poorly written mistakes
