No — California generally does not subsidize ordinary gasoline purchases for drivers simply because they earn under $60,000 a year.
There are two things you might be thinking of:
- A proposed gas-cost rebate: California Assembly Bill 23 proposed rebates for households earning up to $65,000 for single filers or $120,000 for married filers, subject to conditions and a maximum of $2,500 per household. That is a legislative proposal, not proof that a gas subsidy is currently available.
- Clean-vehicle assistance: California's Driving Clean Assistance Program offers eligible low-income residents financial assistance to buy or lease a clean vehicle, potentially worth thousands of dollars. It is not a subsidy for gasoline.
So if someone claims California gives people earning under $60,000 a direct subsidy for the gas they put in a conventional car, I'd ask them for the name of the program. I couldn't verify a general program of that kind.
