I would go as far as saying it worked reasonably well against Joe in 2020, and could’ve worked even better, but Trump had too many other liabilities up to and including getting fucking Covid right after the first debate, which helped Biden 1) avoid one of the debates entirely, and 2) undermine the age attack/liability by making Trump look weak and infirm.
Am I saying that bashing Trump as too old is the decisive issue that will lose the election for him? No. But this is part of the broader set of problems Trump has that are a threat to lose the whole race. It’s why the vibes are off. The problem with being a winner in the 2024 attention economy is that you always have to keep generating things that gain attention. And the more you recycle bits and rely on your incumbent status the greater the risk is to you that seeing you get taken down is a much better attention grabber than seeing you muddle through a process that the audience has already watched you go through twice. |
