(believes that Jesus made Peter the rock upon which the Church would be built, which the gates of Hell would not prevail against)
(thinks the gates of Hell recently prevailed against said rock)

so I went looking for this because i heard something recently from a novus ordo bishop (bishop robert barron) that was interesting re: the gates of hell will not prevail against the church.
historically speaking, this phrase would have resonated with 1st century jews as a call to jewish king campaigns (david). that they were to GO OUT and do x y z. And in the new christian context, the phrase explicitly means not that the church will prevail against the devil as the devil attacks the church but that the church will prevail as it GOES OUT and attacks "the devil's gates". The most historically true reading of that phrase is one of evangelization. As long as the church GOES OUT and spreads the good news, then the devil's fortress cannot withstand the Truth. In our current context, it's about 1) evangelization (which catholics suck at) and 2) fighting the social impulse to privatize one's faith.
it's an interesting argument.
