Confidence is a very big factor, except for the very best athletes who usually understand that winning consistently requires winning ugly on occasions when unable to locate or bring forward their best stuff. For the rest of the field, timing, i.e., when exactly in a person's career he faces another person who is at some or other place in theirs, this is an important factor.
Tszyu was oozing confidence when he made Zab look absolutely foolish. Zab is one of only two fighters ever to land much leather on Floyd. But these two fights took place five years apart, so this is the last place we should look for any transitivity.
I will rarely if ever agree that "Mayweather would have made (insert someone he never fought) his bitch," because, despite his many wins over hall of famers, he is the king of timing his engagements to avoid other when they're hot.
At the same time, I respect him immensely for his brand- and career-building acumen, and for not being played like some bitch but for beating certain big sharks at their own game and making them HIS bitches.

Okay, off the top of my head, I understand Floyd commissioned an online poll for fans to vote in and determine who his next opponent should be.
Amir Kahn won the poll, NOT Maidana; but Amir has exceptionally fast/surprisingly heavy hands (which is, probably, why he won the poll).
Floyd could not accept such a dangerous fight (which is fine, btw, imho).
Fans got to see, instead, the garbage barroom brawler Maidana, twice.
PS- Practicing your Trump flow?
