He assiduously avoided combat throughout his career until he "fought" as a two star general leading a division into Iraq. His career was a parade of sucking up to those in power, beginning with marrying the daughter of the Superintendent at West Point. But the real reason why I dislike him is that this behavior took a tragic turn when he became the face of Bush's Surge in Iraq in 2007, lending legitimacy to this bloody escalation which needlessly cost thousands of lives. Petraeus didn't advocate for the Surge because he believed in it; he did it to ingratiate himself with George W. Bush. And he was richly rewarded for his treachery. At the time, there was a controversy over an ad that called him General Betrayus. What most people don't realize is that the Betrayus nickname came from rank and file soldiers in the Army.
I was pleased to see Petraeus caught in a scandal a few years ago. But it's nowhere near enough punishment for him. |
