this point cannot be overstated. i was able to play a competitive sport at a pretty high level because the team was basically "re-amateurized" but with school support and an endowment to operate off of. being able to compete in college in a sport without being first team all world everything would really be a great thing for our young people and would have a ton of great knock off effects. we already defray all kinds of stupid shit at colleges, why not throw open the doors to a bunch of sports and let kids play for their college and show some pride. would probably help with donations too as kids get a more tangible connection to the college. in the ivy i know that football already had a bit of an ersatz open policy. you could walk on, they would teach you and yeah maybe you only wear a jersey and jeans on the sidelines for 4 years, but you were on the team and some dudes loved it. i know a guy who did this at penn and a couple at yale. |
