this is literally the pattern of every such virus and they understood 4 months ago that this would happen. i remember the early discussions about 'mutating virus': people were constantly corrected that, no, it wouldn't 'mutate into something more dangerous', but instead the opposite would happen: it would become less dangerous as it passed through the population.

so wtf are we even fucking doing.

There are 4 human coronaviruses that circulate through the global population as a form of the common cold. They make up like 15% of common colds.

These viruses even have their own wikipedia pages: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_coronavirus_OC43

This is just becoming one of them. It's how the others started. Doubt "OC43" didn't kill a bunch of people when it entered the population.

So in other words he OP is TITCR just wanted to flesh out a little more.

COVID doesn’t drastically mutate that quickly. That’s good for producing a vaccine but bad in the sense that OP’s wish is unlikely to come to fruition in the near future. It’s not going to be another common cold anytime soon.

The stats in the South say otherwise for everyone outside the extremely sick and elderly.

But I didn't say it was quickly becoming another common cold. Just that it will.

It probably will eventually become something a lot less deadly. But the south’s lower death rate is likely not the result of a mutation. Just better treatment (ex. dexamethasone cutting deaths by up to a third in serious cases) and better sick population (fewer olds; fewer sick/immuno compromised people). It would be odd if the death rate hadn’t declined.

From wiki on the common cold coronaviruses:

Comparison of HCoV-OC43 with the most closely related strain of Betacoronavirus 1 species, bovine coronavirus, indicated that they had a most recent common ancestor in the late 19th century, with several methods yielding most probable dates around 1890, leading authors to speculate that an introduction of the former strain to the human population might have caused the 1889–1890 flu pandemic.[8] HCoV-OC43 likely originated in rodents.

So this is basically the same thing as the 1889-1890 flu pandemic.
