Simone's withdrawal itself isn't what I have a problem with. Pressure gets to high level athletes all the time. (Although it does diminish her supposed "GOAT" status if she can't perform without the quick release version Adderall, having turned down the Japan-legal slow release version).
However, what's bizarre is that the media isn't portraying it as a withdrawal due to a temporary disability, but rather as a an indulgent moment of "self-care," then saying that that's a good thing, much braver than pushing through and competing.
I think the reason for this is that we're going to lose our spot as the preeminent superpower to China soon. The elite responsible for this don't want to be blamed, so they want get people used to the idea that it's OK to just quit in an international competition in the hopes their own surrender in geopolitical competition will be excused.
