Your comment about the rural types being worse than rural America is, as the British would say, utterly daft.

In the first place, there's significant money in the British country and a large middle class in the market towns and villages. There's nothing comparable to the poverty and ignorance of rural America. Nowhere in rural Britain is that far from a city, which is probably part of it. Most of rural Britain is comparable to places like the Berkshires rather than Alabama. There is a large enough yob class but they are not in the rural areas but in the cities and bigger towns.

London is a different beast entirely but someone from NYC would find London bearable. I enjoy London far more than NYC because the scale is more human. Very international these days, so for a trust funder it's a very decent place to live, and is why so many do live there.

For the average man, America is a better place to live in many regards. Salaries are better, housing is bigger, it's easier to own more stuff. Ordinary housing in Britain is tiny, thing are just more expensive all around. It's a passive-aggressive country and it shows, and I find it an old, tired and worn out country and the explosion of SWJ wokery is happening in Britain (albeit not quite at the same scale but it's there too). But the British have the NHS, which is something most average Americans would love to have for all the feigned fears over losing control or whatever. And I say this as an otherwise staunch conservative.

For a rich man, life in Britain/London can be very, very good. If I were to move to Britain we'd be looking at the country somewhere in the southwest, in Devon or Dorset or Wiltshire, or maybe outside Bath in Somerset and using Bristol as our local "city." Buy an old Georgian rectory or smaller manor house with some land outside a pretty village. But for a rich gay boy, London is where he wants to be.

LJL at people ITT saying it must be so great because they have “universal healthcare…” Do you actually know anyone in the U.S. who doesn’t have health insurance? Every person with a job (or in a family with someone who has a job) gets it through work. Old people get it free. Kids get it free. Poor people get it free. And the health coverage you get in most states is far better than what folks in England get. (Did you know they have waiting periods to start chemo, etc? https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/hospitals/guide-to-nhs-waiting-times-in-england/ The same is true from Canada, where the government often has to pay to get people treated in US hospitals because they can’t deliver services on time.)
