Kaitlyn Younger has been an academic standout since she started studying algebra in third grade.
She took her first advanced-placement course as a freshman, scored 1550 on her SATs as a junior at McKinney High School near Dallas and will graduate this spring with an unweighted 3.95 grade-point average and as the founder of the school’s accounting club. Along the way she performed in and directed about 30 plays, sang in the school choir, scored top marks on the tests she has so far taken for 11 advanced-placement classes, helped run a summer camp and held down a part-time job.
“She is extraordinary,” said Jeff Cranmore, her guidance counselor at McKinney High School.
Ms. Younger, 18 years old, was cautiously optimistic when she applied to top U.S. colleges last fall. Responses came this month: Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Cornell, University of Pennsylvania, University of Southern California, University of California, Berkeley, and Northwestern all rejected her.
“I expected a bunch wouldn’t accept me,” she said. “I didn’t expect it to be this bad.”
The responses are part of a wave of rejections swamping top students who applied to many highly selective schools during the most competitive year on record. Now, students have until May 1 to let schools know where they will attend.
At Harvard University, the latest acceptance rate is 3.2%.

Harvard received a record 61,220 applications during the current admissions year and accepted 1,954 (3.2%). Brown received a record 50,649 applications and offered admission to 2,546 (5%). Yale received 50,015 applications and admitted 2,234 (4.5%). University of California, Los Angeles, received a record 149,700 applications, 10,000 more than last year; the school’s acceptance rate wasn’t available.
A reason applications were so inflated is because more than three-quarters of colleges and universities have stopped mandating entrance exams. With that barrier removed, more students tried their luck at selective schools that placed greater emphasis on grades, academic rigor and racial and socio-economic diversity.

The result is that while many less prestigious schools are struggling to fill their classes, the most selective U.S. schools are drawing from a broader applicant pool—and that is driving the bar for admission higher than in past years.
High volume means admissions officers at some elite colleges spend just a few minutes reviewing individual applications. This places enormous pressure on students to stand out, and not just among their own high-school classmates.
Nearly 55,000 students applied to the University of Pennsylvania—about 15,000 more than applied two years ago. Many applications contained “national and international accolades for research that is already pushing the boundaries of academic discovery,” wrote Whitney Soule, vice provost and dean of admissions on the school’s website.

For students such as Ms. Younger, the odds are particularly long. She is a middle-class white female from a public high school in Texas who wants to study business. Each characteristic places her in an overrepresented group, said Sara Harberson, a former admission officer at University of Pennsylvania and now a private college-admissions counselor.
Kaitlyn Younger applied her stage makeup before rehearsing 'Sweeney Todd' in Plano, Texas.
Nearly half of white students admitted to Harvard between 2009 and 2014 were recruited athletes, legacy students, children of faculty and staff, or on the dean’s interest list—applicants whose parents or relatives have donated to Harvard, according to a 2019 study published in the National Bureau of Economic Research.
At Harvard, low-income students with top academic scores had an admit rate of 24% compared to 15% for all other applicants, according to a 2013 study by the school. Harvard has said it believes enrolling a diverse student body is important because the school wants students to learn to work with people from different backgrounds.
“The middle class tends to get a little bit neglected,” said Hafeez Lakhani, a private college counselor in New York who charges $1,200 an hour. “Twenty years ago, Ms. Younger would have had a good shot at an Ivy League school.”
Ms. Younger’s father attended the University of Oklahoma and her mother went to Montclair State University in New Jersey. She has no connection to the faculty or alumni at any elite school, nor did she hire a test-preparation coach or a private college counselor.
Her school serves McKinney, Texas, a fast-growing suburb 30 miles outside of Dallas. In a given year, about half of the school’s graduates enroll at four-year colleges; most attend public universities in Texas, Dr. Cranmore said. He recalls two McKinney graduates enrolling at Yale and one at Princeton over the past decade.

“I don’t know what else she could have done,” he said.
Ms. Younger was exceptionally focused and competitive from an early age, said her mother, Debra Younger.
She is also a self-described perfectionist. At age 7, she began taking medication to calm her anxiety, she said. In middle school, she was the only girl in her advanced math classes. That isolation led to bullying, she added.

During her sophomore year, joint pain and depression exacerbated her anxiety. She enrolled in a two-month, outpatient mental-health program that limited her academic work to two hours a day. Her grades in English and AP World History fell to an 88 and 89, respectively, because she didn’t have time to finish the assigned reading, she said.

She was working to improve her marks when the pandemic arrived and the school froze grades during the second semester. She received her first (and only) B’s. They pulled down her GPA. She is now ranked 23rd out of 668, or in the third percentile, she said.
Ms. Younger wrote in the applications about her history of depression and anxiety to explain the two B’s she earned during her sophomore year.
College rejection letters don’t come with a detailed explanation. Schools typically don’t discuss their decisions on individual applications because of privacy rules. The schools that rejected Ms. Younger declined to comment on her application, and most declined to comment on their acceptance rate.

Jon Burdick, vice provost for enrollment at Cornell, said the school is working to increase its undergraduate population by 1,000, but still doesn’t have enough slots for all the qualified students who apply.
“In the end we know that most of those we couldn’t admit would have been capable of achieving excellence at Cornell, and we regret having to disappoint them,” Mr. Burdick said.
Ms. Younger said she doesn’t know why she was rejected but thinks her two B’s during sophomore year were problematic, along with her demographic profile.
Kaitlyn Younger studied for an advanced-placement class in costume last week, as she took a rehearsal break at a theater in Plano, Texas.
Gender also matters. Women now apply to college in much larger numbers than men. Schools seek to maintain gender parity in enrollment, which means young women often face higher standards and greater competition.
Ms. Harberson said Ms. Younger’s accomplishments on the stage at her high school and with her community theater troupe—as well as for the accounting club—were impressive but wouldn’t stand out among Ivy League applicants.

Of the 12 schools to which Ms. Younger applied, she was wait-listed at Rice University and accepted at the University of Texas, Austin—but not to the business school. She plans on attending Arizona State University to study business on an academic scholarship. The acceptance rate there last year was 88%.
If she had to do high school all over again, Ms. Younger said she would still set high standards for herself and work hard but would try not to stress herself out so much.
“I used to be the kind of person who, if I got a low A, anything lower than a 95, I would be upset with myself because I thought that was the standard for the types of institutions I wanted to attend,” she said. “All that stress was not worth it. I want to do the best I can, but in a way that does not deteriorate my mental health if I struggle.”

Universities that already excel in research shouldn't be fucking around with MOOCs, which is outside their area of expertise. Let non-R1s do that.
Also FWIW UT tried MOOCs and they failed miserably. It turns out that the most important part of a top (state) university is to be physically near other high achievers.
The issue is too many people going to college. You shouldn't need a college degree to do most jobs. Paper pushing didn't suddenly get harder in the 70s.

it's like why should we (H, S, whatever) take you when you probably got dinged from a magnet high school

Agreed.
If she's as hard working in her first jobs out of college as in HS, she will do very well in life. Many of the kids going to Ivy this fall will flounder in non profits or soft social services jobs.
The only soft criticism I have for the girl in the article is she wanted to study business, thus ending up at ASU's business school, so why did she apply to the elite Ivies? Penn has Wharton but otherwise what was the point? There are private colleges like Tulane that have decent business programs if that was her goal, and probably a better launching pad into corporate America than coming out of Cornell or Brown or Dartmouth with a liberal arts degree.

I work in the real world and the statement is impossible to quantify.
Let's just say I know more than a few rapidly advancing hotshots at corps like Danaher who came out of Tulane or flagship business schools. They usually got a MBA along the way. At the same time I know more than a few Ivy econ grads who are not doing as well as you might think. Most are fine, but not raking in the advancements and salaries and bonuses.
Top 10% ivy outcome is genuinely impressive. The bulk end up materially comfortable. This girl will do fine if she has a strong work ethic and some direction.

It's been close to 20 years but at Wharton there were plenty of MBA students out of the flagship state universities. And out of Deloitte.
But we'll see ;) She could easily flame out.
Someone should bookmark her name and periodically report back every few years with a summary of her progress.

another is probably being stupid enough to apply to a university that costs half a million to attend just to become an E&Y paper pusher
none of this matters anyway, if libs have destroyed H as OP implies, that is a good thing, as no institution should have such a stranglehold on power

I did notice this discrepancy. With tens of thousands of great applicants rejected you can nitpick every single one to pieces to find the reason.
Friends of my parents have a grandkid at Penn (the oldest grandkids of their set of friends) was a major theater girl in HS and is studying theatre at Penn and, according to her grandparents, wants to work on Broadway as a producer. Regardless of what life actually has in store for her (law school probably) at least it makes sense.
The girl in the article was a major theatre kid but it didn't seem like it was reflected in her application especially as she's ending up at a business school.

The real question is what would she gain from going to one of these schools? She can go to UT for free and then go to one of the many public medical schools in Texas and become a chill dermatologist. Or if she wants to be an accounTTTant, the UT business school is as good as Harvard in Texas.
Even though Austin is a TTT shitlib town in decline, she's far more likely to come out of four years of UT free from liberal brainwashing than she would be coming out of an ivy. So all around, this is a win.
Also, why the fuck would an instate Texan pick USC over UT?

But it's also possible she didn't apply wisely. No Vanderbilts, CMU, WUSTL on her list. Only Rice.
If I had a kid with her stats I'd have pushed them to apply early to Vandy or CMU or Rice. And I'm an Ivy legacy. Too much of a crapshoot.

there's not much better you can transfer up to, the Harvard type schools don't take a lot of standard strivers they dinged the first time around, they want vets, people who did something very different then came back to do community college at 30, minorities again, etc. A good percentage is varsity athletes too
She can probably get up to like Vanderbilt or Amherst or something with some luck and a 4.0

my wife and i have been talking about options when schooling gets weird and they try to teach this tranny shit to our kids. one option on the table is homeschooling. she already stays home so it's a strong option and one she puts at the top. she's ready at any moment to pull the trigger on this.
i've thought about this a ton and there is another option. some think it's be the parents who argue and yell at the school board, and that's fine, but it's still a bit impotent.
here is what i think is the answer: teach your kids to fucking rebel in class. when this tranny shit comes up, let them purposely become the class pains in the ass. let them fail tests on purpose and put real answers in. full blown fuck this unit, idgaf if i get a 0, it's all a lie. if we teach our kids to not gaf when lies are taught to them and to rebel in class. raise your hand and say NO out loud. blurt out. fuck it. that will cause more traction. it's not about parents. they want the KIDS to accept it. so teach THEM not to and make it hard to even do it in class.

I reread the article and have a better sense of who this girl is. She's a clueless middle class white girl in a middle class Texas suburb. She has *no idea* what the world of elite colleges is like or how to game for it or how to apply strategically.
Look at the list of colleges she applied to: these are all big name colleges she probably picked because they're mentioned in magazines or somewhere in pop culture. USC and Berkeley and Harvard and Brown and whatever. That's their common factor. They're hugely popular for different reasons. She was applying to the concept of a highly sought after college, not the reality.
A UMC kid from a fancy Dallas suburb and elite high school like Hockaday or Highland Park would have applied strategically, which would likely mean ED at Vanderbilt or CMU or Tufts or WUSTL or JHU, or if she can't apply ED for financial reasons, include schools like Tulane on the list. If she wanted a quasi-Ivy mystique, include LACs like Amherst, Bowdoin, and Wellesley. Wellesley manages to retain an elite status in the world of consulting recruiting and iBanking. I'm sure she didn't considered Barnard, a decent back door to Columbia and NYC.
All the elite colleges get thousands of applications like hers: a clueless high school kid attracted to the glamor of the college without offering anything to the college. Which was likely the fatal flaw in her application. None of the adcoms who rejected her would be surprised at her outcome - off to ASU to study business, which isn't inherently flawed but tells you they saw things in her application and essays that turned them off. If you're interested in studying business in college, you don't apply to Brown or Harvard. When I used to interview for my Ivy alma mater, it was quickly apparent that any whiff of non-liberal arts pursuits doomed you.

She couldn't have applied to H or B as a business major but the only pattern to the colleges she applied to was that they were insanely popular and competitive colleges. Even USC received 71,000 applicants for 2021. She applied to Berkeley, but what for? If she wanted California she needed to apply to a range of CA schools including lesser UCs. If she wanted the east coast Ivy mystique, she needed to look at the next rung including Tufts and the LACs. If she wanted to study business, her applications should have been focused on schools with business programs.
I don't dispute the rest of what you said. Odds were always against her because she's an unfashionable category, a white girl from a middle class white suburb. While Ivy admits were never pure meritocracies they are far less meritocratic now than they were 20 years ago. She was a rubber stamp rejection.

Overall the girl seems directionless. This might be a case where the system, against all odds, actually worked. They saw through her mediocrity.
First off is the overload on drama, choir, plays etc. That's good if that's what you want to do. But when you take that and apply to business school, it just comes across as someone not sure of what they want. The general inability to handle stress was not a good sign for an adcom. She racked up a bunch of extra-curriculars but there was no central theme. It's like she did a bunch of random shit because that's what you do.
I think she's ending up exactly where she should and it's going to work out well for her and ASU.

She got dinged because she couldn’t handle public HS without mental breakdown and then actually wrote about it. College will be 10x more stressful for her after you factor in that almost all other non-athlete whites and Asians come from an elite/feeder HS and already get how things work.
It’s actually a blessing in disguise because now she can live a normal life instead of killing herself/her parents financially and possibly literally by blindly following the striver/prestige route when she’s destined to be a manager in the accounting dept at Boeing after a stint at a big 4 where she will be weeded out quickly.

I see where Nutella is coming from.
The girl has great stats because she grinded for it. She's not the same as someone who gets the same stats with only half the effort, which would be her peers at an elite school. I went to a high performing high school and then an Ivy, and in neither case did I ever feel overwhelmed and I probably put in a fraction of the hours she does.
There are other clues to the limits of her natural aptitude. She had her sights set on the elite schools and didn't figure out you don't go to most of them to study "business." The selection of colleges she applied to shows she wasn't strategic nor did she do her research into the odds. Her essay on mental health wasn't thought out well when she should have focused on her theater/performing arts background as the real hook. But she couldn't reconcile it with wanting to study business.

She took time off in high school for mental health services when she lived at home and didn’t have to lift a finger being at a normal high school. How do you think she would’ve done at a magnet school? College is an adjustment for everyone but esp for those who aren’t used to being in a certain environment. There are those who go in seamlessly as if they own the place (legacies, boarding school kids) and know to take rocks for jocks in combo with some respectable classes. The Asians are all from stuy equivalent. For someone who has mental health issues, she’s going in blind with no support.
One of my freshman year roommates was a valedictorian from a regular school in Minnesota and really struggled and would cry about her grades (she got like a 3.0 in econ). She gave up taking more econ and ended up a psych major. She didn’t have real mental health issues like this girl and ivy was pointless for her life outcome anyway (back in Midwest working f100 job).

I’ve forgotten what my college admissions essays were about but I most certainly made up some shit about wanting to be a war zone correspondent or something because I was EIC of one of the newspaper. I didn’t use it as an opportunity to explain away a b+.
Unlike high school where you end up taking a bunch of AP tests, college grading in humanities is totally subjective and it’s mostly giving the professor what they want to hear to reinforce their stupid world views. I’m sure it’s 1000% worse now and this girl would’ve pulled all nighters doing all the reading and get a b+ and have a mental breakdown instead of an A plagiarizing from jezebel.

You’re way too focused on this girl and not enough on the story behind the piece. The point is that college applications have gotten ridiculous. When you were applying to college, a girl like this could have / would have gotten into at least one of these schools. Yes, we know she is poorly advised, but that’s kind of the point here too; had she been the child of a dirt farmer an hour outside of Abilene, she would have had a chance. If she was an inner-city black crack baby from Baltimore, she would have been admitted. But instead she’s from a middle class suburban family so the adversity she has faced is held against her, rather than viewed as something she had the strength of mind to overcome.
I agree with you that her essays sound uncompelling, her academics sound indistinguishable from a million others, and that she really doesn’t have a “hook” that adcoms can point to to rationalize admitting her, but why is that now the standard? It certainly hasn’t lead to better innovations or meaningful humanitarian progress.

So this seemingly smart person is making up stories for a news piece to make herself seem stupid?
Most degrees are not “real” degrees, mine is no exception. The point of attending an ivy is college recruiting into certain jobs, to leverage it for a network in the future and to get automatic assumption that you’re some baseline level smart. Most people don’t make use of the network and that smart “halo” lasts no longer than your first few jobs.
By the time you’re my old age, I barely look at where people went to school and only see where they’ve worked.

Surprised no one has mentioned this, but it seems pretty clear the SAT is a failure at this point. They've obviously dumbed it down and are giving out way more 1400+ than they did 20 years ago.
The SATs should just be harder so people have a chance to prove themselves. Part of this is probably so more minorities get comparably high scores, but it has been a disaster for other kids.
It shouldn't be that an essentially perfect test score and an essentially perfect GPA means you can't get into your fucking major at a state school.
