We can study the enamel on fossil teeth and see what people ate over the course of their lifetimes, and "we" seem to have gone through stages where in bad circumstances when there was nothing else available we could eat c4 plants, AKA grass, like gorillas. Over time we gained sufficient access to c3 plants that we lost the ability to do that. You can find points in time in particular places where we were eating mostly meat, but it doesn't look like that's how we ate during the bulk of our history. It looks instead like we retained the ability to eat a wide range of foods as a survival strategy against periods of scarcity.
