Opera has always been color blind and Shakespearean plays have long been color blind and fantasy is fantasy so who cares what the skin colors are. At the same time the deliberately diverse casting is part of a significant shift in film productions. You can't do a movie about Tudor or Medieval or Victorian Europe without shoehorning in a bunch of sassy black characters. But no one is going around pretending there were whites in Zulu tribes in 1500. To do so would be seen as distinctly racist and whitesplaining.
So I can see why many feel history and culture is being deliberately distorted for ideological reasons - westerners aren't allowed to own their culture but other cultures have to be treated with hyersensitivity. And it's also affecting how the stupid woke masses believe "real history" to be, I've come across a few instances of woke warriors insisting there really were lots of black people in Regency Britain. |
