I do 90% traffic and dui's- my complaint is not about the work itself but the quantity of it. I haven't been able to crack 67k per year and I live in a high COL area. The thing that held me back the most I discovered from CSLG- He says that he got started handling issues for friends and family then got referrals from there. I never had much of either and most of my friends already "have someone handling it for me." Basically if you have a good social circle, it could easily work out for you. |

kids that graduate UG and go into IB, or law school and go to biglaw, are making giant sacrifices to enter a profession as close to the top as they can, and will likely never see real success because of it. Real success is something you build over a lifetime.
If you love your current job then that kind of longer term success seems relevant to consider when trying to judge if you've failed already or not |

I know an Oxford PhD who has spent his entire career teaching at private schools and he makes like 6 figures and has an expensive house. You've already invested in a Phil PhD. By going to law school you are basically back to being 21 except there is less upside for you from law school than for a 21 year old because of fewer working years. In a sense it's like you have a decent poker hand already (a PhD) and you're chucking it all in for five new cards when there's only one draw to go.
I used to do some activities at a local community college and befriended a number of faculty there. They had a great time. None had PhDs. They had great working hours, long vacation breaks, decent, stable pay and better students than you'd think. None of this adjunct pay-you-a-few-grand for a whole course nonsense. A full-time faculty position. Pension. Lots of time to do things like start a business on the side or pursue other interests. The point is you shouldn't throw away the cards in your hand just because you can't make a royal flush with them. You've used your Phil PhD to pursue exactly one career (uni prof) and that's too fine a needle to thread in my humble opinion. |

Date: September 24th, 2022 8:40 PM Author: umber brunch the people i know who had the toughest law school experience are the ones with a ton of debt. when you have that level of debt, it reduces your options because you need to maintain lucrative employment (even if you hate it) to pay the debt. i enjoyed the school part fine but really got lucky with a few breaks early in my career. so for me it was the right call, but my advice for other people is still generally don't do it -- i know a lot of law grads who live lives nobody wants. if you're gonna do it, make sure you study the lsat as much as you can.
