You live in Brussels, right?

Yeah. Something changed between 2007 and 2017, when we returned to the US. It's all.... very weird.

No. I live in Euro tho. And yeah, whenever I go back it’s like another planet. I expect it to be how I left it (which was already going down the gutter) but always find it’s even gotten worse

People seem even fatter than I remember. They seem more superficial and unable to have a genuine conversation or to even express themselves initially in a genuine way.

Almost everyone I know in Europe will smoke at least socially. They’re all thin, most of them workout and run all the time. The US has been completely brainwashed about tobacco

I myself run a sub 6 min mile and a sub 20 min 5k after years of smoking 10 plus cigs a day. Obviously doesn’t help but makes you wonder for sure

In my case it was in 2007 America was still one country, Americans could disagree but we were still one family. In 2017 it was clear the two halves of the country was not only no longer talking to each other but openly hating each other.

A lot of shit happened after 2017 to worsen the divide. Republicans are undeniably wacko but the Democrats have pulled so much shit with identity politics and DEI and the cronyism between media and Democratic operatives and the twitter files and COVID told you that large swathes of Americans really don't care about freedom of speech or press or any of the classical enlightenment values that used to be cornerstone American principles. They've turned politics into a religion while hating the Republicans for being religious.

Republicans are dumb as fuck but at least like dumb people who can't win arguments, they still know what is right and wrong because they're not intelligent enough to lie.

Tbh that goes back to the 90s or before. But yeah in the country I live there’s several political parties but almost no one identifies so hardcore with any of them and the disagreements are usually over minor stuff. In the U.S. its like a marketing campaign totally captured both sides.

Social media and tech is behind it all. So many people seem to live lives almost wholly online and online identities supersedes the real world. Echo chambers and bubbles are real. Perhaps that's why younger people have lost all meaningful understanding of biology and nature.

But polarization is really a confluence of many factors rather than just one or two. Social, economic, cultural, political. Agree that you could see the origins as early as the 1990s. Somehow the tipping point was the election of Orange Man Bad.

Very fair assessment

I hate libs with the burning passion of a thousand suns but holy fuck am I depressed about how unbearably low iq Republican politics is. It’s literally comical.

I tend not to think it was Jews per se but I think that argument merits some consideration.

I used to be a little self conscious about smoking in front of my coworkers but I don’t care anymore. I light up every chance I get.
