Matsuro Shakagawa, a retired Toyota executive, explained that Japanese companies doing business in America use a principle known as hayashitoraku, loosely translated as "truck made from garbage" in English.
"American consumers are not sophisticated and will buy low quality vehicles, even ones made of garbage," he said. "This is something that has taken Japanese companies many decades to fully appreciate," he added.
Toyota sold 56,000 Tacomas last quarter alone, and is expecting a 12 percent increase next quarter.
