Never understood this band. People who like them seem to think absurdity is itself, compelling. Are the lyrics any good? They seem "okay" like I think they're catchy and clever (a little bit).

My grand theory is that they knew they were shitty/mediocre musicians who couldn't play their instruments or write great songs so they had a huddle and decided, "What if we were just really weird and made fun of society and gave all the oddballs a raison d'etre?"

If I'm wrong someone clue me in.

This is fair. But besides Psycho Killer and Once in a Lifetime do they have any other listenable material? Seems like a very thin meme.

"Stop Making Sense" seems like their master achievement because they got to wear goofy outfits that became iconic.

they used reggaeton and latin/afro influences in a cool new way, i.e., neat rhythms and percussion combined with the punk ethic. also brian eno produced Remain in Light, which helped give birth to modern electronic music

It's a bunch of random stuff thrown together and in order to be a fan you have to REALLY like their lyrics and the "shtick" of being absurdist otherwise it's a barely tonal jam band.

This track is only somewhat okay 6/10 but not memorable. Without the weird autistic shouting and strange noises it's a mediocre groove at best.

Again return to my previous argument that you have to really like quirkiness and think absurdity itself is really gripping and important artistically to be into this shit.

To be fair this is the least bad TH song I've yet heard.

i mean it's like liking the beatles - shitty band but they were "important." same for TH. they combined latin/afrocuban beats and punk in a way that hasn't really been done before or since. TH is also a significant point for Brian Eno's career and the evolution of ambient/electronic, so that's something

it's fine to not like them - i've been over them for years - but they were a cool band that did cool things. i mean name a band that sounds like TH, not sure i can do that.

your main point is valid which is that their main appeal and reason they're remembered is being goofballs, but they were and are a cool unique sound

Yeah The Beatles were amazing go fuck yourself. They weren't just "important" because they were influential or really famous at the time. They invented all of the core concepts of popular music in the post WWII era, and were the greatest pop song writers ever. If you don't like The Beatles there's something wrong with you.

I like lots of weird stuff too like I've probably listened to more Frank Zappa than any other poaster. But at least his stuff was musical and wasn't some afrobeat psychobabble and his biggest achievement wasn't wearing an inflated suit because other autistic people thought that was really sticking it to society somehow (???).

Lol no one actually listens to Zappa. I've never met a plebe who even knew who he was. And most people who say they like him don't actually listen to him. And most people who do listen to him only know stuff like Apostrophe, Overnite Sensation, or his compilation of songs with dirty words in them. I'm more into his jazz stuff and instrumentals. My favorite record is Weasels which neither you nor anyone you know has ever listened to because it's so out there. I know you don't know anything about Zappa and have never listened to him, and don't know anyone who has so your pointing fingers argument is easily falsifiable.

I also like Deerhoof which is a completely unapproachable band. And Pavement if you really want to grill me on hipster bona fides.

Fusion is the most underrated era and was obscured by prog which mostly sucks and is unlistenable trash. The difference between Fusion and Prog is that jazz actually took musical knowledge and adding pop and rock themes made it more listenable than Miles Davis who went too far off the reservation. The problem with Fusion is no one liked it and it wasn't popular lol. It's the ultimate musical IQ test whether you like something amazing no one else knows about.

Ponty was a genius and you need a high musical IQ to understand this.

They were kind of like 3 different bands, you had the early "punk" minimalist Talking Heads of Psycho Killer, then Eno joined and they got commercially big and more musically artistic with Remain In Light and Speaking in Tongues, which also coincided with MTV. Then Eno left, and Byrne took over the band (which pissed off the other members) and they turned into more of a wholesome, cheesier band for kids and their moms with True Stories and Little Creatures. So there was sort of something for everyone. I liked the 2nd iteration of Talking Heads (especially Burning Down the House and the whole Speaking in Tongues album) but didn't really like #1 or #3 that much.

Thom has shitty taste I don't like REM either. Have you ever listened to one of his playlists or heard one of his DJ sets? He has absolutely horrendous taste but is a Mozart grade songwriter. All that shit was popular when he was growing up and there was no internet. They had Top of the Pops and shit and then New Wave came out and it was the only thing on. They had to listen to crap like The Jam and Wham! and other garbage. That was just the era. Thom probably did get some of his lyric writing shtick from TH and REM but thankfully not the retarded shrieking. Also he absolutely dunked on them and is thousands of times more famous.

they made some good pop music and somehow conjured up an aura of being deep and thoughtful. but they were just pop music.

nothing they did was as enduring as the song that the other band members did without David Byrne as the Tom Tom Club.
