this was the scariest thing on earth to elites on both 'sides' so they leaned in hard on race/DEI/identity politics/trannies/culture war shit. it worked and everybody forgot all about dismantling the zero-accountability casino. no matter what direction the next round of this comes from, it will place scrutiny on the system that is supposed to create opportunity, security, and class mobility. those things don't exist for the majority of americans in 2025 and beyond, and even the apathetic social benefits class will get 'political' if they feel a pinch. votes will be against the rich, which is a nightmare for the reigning political class who must protect the flow of money into politics.
the economy is going to hit the bricks eventually and life will be actually unaffordable, not just unpleasant, for the proles who could formerly live like ghetto and trailer kings. a few outsider politicians will start to key into this and an actual populist movement, not fake trump populism, will foment. it'll be hilarious watching the democratic party try to stomp it out even though it would in theory push MAGA culture to the side. |

The corporatist dems like Obama 'saved' the economy but quietly pulled scrutiny off the financial sector and went to the well of culture war issues as the outrage messaging for the base. Like many others have observed, when a party gets rolling with the presidency, congress, and public support, they swing for the fences and democrats are still controlled by money like anyone, so they channeled messaging into racking culture war wins. It really sucked up all of the air and the economic and ethics dialogue of the recession faded away.
So not orchestrated by any means but washington establishment and particularly the democrats happily contributed to the demise of that movement in its infancy because it was bad for business. You could argue that it was necessary to characterize the government's response as a 'win' to keep confidence high but that's pretty attenuated in the context of the fuck all anyone did to prevent that kind of thing from happening again. |
