Companies, fearing legal liability, will only confirm dates of employment and title, because if they say the guy sucks it's a lawsuit (especially if the guy is a minority). Somebody who's a known quantity and can vouch for somebody is a lot more reliable source of information. And I've vetoed somebody myself when I used to work with them at a prior place and know they suck. I don't like this networking bullshit either, but shitlibs did this.
