The number of Indians caught crossing illegally into the United States between January and May 2025 has dropped by 70% compared to the same period last year. This sharp decline follows the return of Donald Trump to the White House and a renewed focus on immigration enforcement. Despite the fall, 10,382 Indians, including at least 30 unaccompanied minors, many from Gujarat were apprehended at the US border in the first five months of this year, according to a report by the Times of India.

Officials attribute the drop to a disruption in smuggling networks that cater to Indian migrants. These syndicates reportedly scaled back their operations in late 2024 as Trump’s return to power seemed likely. A person associated with a Gujarat-based smuggling network told TOI, “The moment it became clear Trump would likely win again, routes started drying up. People still want to go, but smugglers have either scaled back or raised costs, and the fear of stricter deportation is real.”

H-1b visa applications for FY2026 have fallen to 358,737, a 25% decline from FY2025, with Indian professionals particularly affected.

I believe there are a total of 120,000 H1B visas given out every year. Those are still being given. That cap was reached this year as well.

The reason why the applications have gone down is because multiple applications per person are no longer allowed. This was actually implemented under the Biden admin.

Total registrations dropped significantly – USCIS data shows 358,737 H‑1B registrations were submitted for FY 2026, marking a ~25% decrease compared to FY 2025, which saw around 480,000 submissions.

Cap remains unchanged – The annual H‑1B visa cap is still 85,000 (65,000 regular + 20,000 advanced‑degree exemption), and this cap has indeed been reached in FY 2026.

Reduction in duplicate entries – Under the Biden-era “beneficiary-centric” rule, each individual can only be entered once in the lottery, which reduced multiple registrations per person. Average registrations per person dropped from ~1.06 to ~1.01, showing that duplicate filings became rare.

So jevv is correct: fewer applications were submitted largely because non-duplicate rules eliminated multiple filings per applicant, not because the cap was lowered. The cap remains in place and was reached as usual.

Canada’s population barely grew in the first quarter of 2025, reflecting the impacts of government decisions to reduce both temporary and permanent immigration. The latest estimates from Statistics Canada show the population rose by just 20,107 people – or 0.0 percent – between January 1 and April 1, 2025. This is the slowest quarterly increase since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and continues a clear trend of declining population growth.

Per-country caps are numerical restrictions that govern the allocation of green cards to people from specific countries. In a year, approximately 140,000 employment-based green cards are authorised, but only a maximum of 7% of these are granted to individuals from a country. A backlog is created should the number of sponsored individuals from a particular country exceed the 7% limit.
