Cat among survivors as Idaho driver's potato-laden semi crashes in alleged DUI incident
The Wyoming Highway Patrol said Matthew Berggren crashed his semi into a river in Wyoming. A passenger was airlifted to a hospital, and the cat taken to a shelter.
WYOMING, USA — An Idaho man faces drunken driving charges after police allege his semi-truck plunged into the Medicine Bow River in Wyoming, sending his passenger to a Colorado hospital by helicopter and a cat to a shelter.
According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP), Matthew Berggren, 40, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on Oct. 21 following the 4:03 a.m. crash on Interstate 80 near Elk Mountain.
Investigators stated that the eastbound semi-truck, loaded with potatoes, crossed the median before crashing into the river. A woman passenger was airlifted to a medical facility in Colorado. Her condition was not immediately released.
A cat traveling with the pair survived the crash unharmed. Authorities said workers from High Altitude Towing found the animal, which was taken to the Rawlins animal shelter.
WHP stated Berggren has been released on bond following an initial court hearing.
Recovery crews pulled both the tractor and trailer from the river. Additionally, the Environmental Protection Agency inspected and cleared the crash site after the vehicle was removed.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol urged motorists to make safe choices before driving.
