direct extraction is 14% of state GDP, not including associated financial services, manufacturing etc. It's something like 40% of the entire domestic oil production capacity of the country.

It probably wasn't going blue anyway, but Biden's plan to transition out and be net zero emissions is exactly in line with the oil super majors' plan.

The oil industry is literally committing to ending the oil industry right now. All are going to zero-emissions targets. All the big new investment is in renewables and natural gas. Biden's statement is perfectly in-line with what the majors plan over the next 25-50 years.

https://www.conocophillips.com/sustainability/sustainability-news/story/conocophillips-adopts-paris-aligned-climate-risk-framework-to-meet-net-zero-operational-emissions-ambition-by-2050/

https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/bp-to-invest-5b-a-year-on-low-carbon-and-cut-fossil-fuel-output-by-40-percent-by-2030

There's a lot of talk about hitting peak demand around 2030.

I wrote it. It's a much more complicated and nuanced issue than it got portrayed in the debate.

Biden's right that there's no video of him saying he'll ban fracking. He had to run to get Obama elected in 2012. His position has always been that you want to transition away.

That's the same position the industry has taken, however disingenuously.

No it's not really that nuanced. To anyone that has followed democratic politics over the last 20+ years it's clear they've wanted to destroy the fossil fuel industry. Of course CEOs are going to hedge bets and placate, it's in their best interest. Do you really think that Exxon, Chevron, Conoco, all the mid-majors, the mid-stream transport and pipeline companies, plus all the service companies that collectively employ millions and create $100s of billions of revenue and GDP (and have invested $100s of billion in infrastructure) are just going to throw it all away? Come on, man! At least use 60 of your 80 IQ points to think this through.

Well Exxon is pretty clearly going with "fuck that" but the others are looking toward a world where oil is not the most valuable energy commodity. Total and BP both expect oil demand to max out around 2030. It will still be a huge part of the economy on the current trajectory, but a declining part. And if there is some big breakthrough with gas or renewables then it'll be even faster. You'll still always need oil for the gajillion petroleum products we use. But you're not going to run your economy on it.

https://www.worldoil.com/news/2020/9/29/total-joins-bp-in-projecting-an-oil-demand-peak-around-2030

The trend for major projects being funded are definitely more renewables/natural gas.

Of course the independents and service companies aren't on board. What use is an oil pipeline in a windfarm? A billion dollar E&P company can't afford to place bets on renewables. Who needs a roughneck when the solar panels require and EE degree.

The Oil Age is coming to a close, at least in my kids' lifetime. It will have been a good 200 year run, but it won't last forever.

I don't disagree that the oil majors are looking at other avenues for growth and revenue exploitation, but to imply that somehow these companies are forsaking oil in the short-mid or even long term is laughable and disingenuous as best.

Yeah, that's one of the points I always make when people want to ban oil. Simply not feasible and global demand is going to increase for at least the next decade.

But under Obama there was a lot of regulatory rule making around emissions that made the industry upset, but it got implemented and the majors were able to adapt. Even when Trump rolled back these regulations a lot of companies decided to just follow them anyway since they'll be back under a Democratic administration.

I view it as analogous to data center transitioning to cloud. Massive incumbency investments will slow down the process, but even the companies who are the most reliant on the on premise revenue are insistent that they will be a part of the transition to a cloud dominant model, even though their progress to this point is at best questionable and at worst pure window dressing. Still it’s an inevitable change and a policy intervention to accelerate it would hurt the incumbents but their only choice in that policy environment would be to engage and try to win new IP fights and regulatory battles to carve out their space in the next generation. Because of all their existing relationships with all stakeholders (not just suppliers/supply chain or customers but also the policy makers and linked products and markets) they are unlikely to disappear completely but the smartest among them will embrace and outmaneuver their peers during this transition phase.

Hey moron, supermajors aren’t the Oil Industry in texas anymore. Or America. They were all relatively better off BEFORE fracking. They’ve bought in recently-ish but the major players are all independents. Supermajors were great at foreign drilling and offshore - both of which aren’t hot assets now. The supermajors are moving towards renewables because they realize their edge isn’t in fracking.

The trumpmo overconfidence about Arizona is bizarre. Even if you buy the entire trafalgar theory about hidden votes it’s way less relevant and impactful there, and Trafalgar’s own October polling puts it neck and neck with 4+% undecided. Not to mention that Trump spent his entire presidency shitting all over their most visible/leading GOP figures. Best case scenario for Trump in AZ is a coin flip right now.
