maybe better than Titanic as far as capturing the atmosphere of sailing in the period. That scene where Crowe and his first mate are at the top of the main-sail chasing the enemy ship is incredible.

The Far Side of the World is the tenth historical novel in the Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian, first published in 1984. The story is set during the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812.

In Gibraltar, Captain Aubrey receives another mission, to sail HMS Surprise to protect British whalers in the Pacific Ocean from USS Norfolk.

The film combines elements from 13 different novels of Patrick O'Brian, but the basic plot mostly comes from The Far Side of the World. However, in the film version, the action takes place in 1805, during the Napoleonic wars, instead of 1813 during the Anglo-American war, as the producers wished to avoid offending American audiences.[citation needed] In consequence, the fictional opponent was changed from the USS Norfolk to the French privateer frigate Acheron.

They're also obsessed with the "weather gauge". So if you have the weather gauge you will win the battle but if you don't you must run away or be destroyed. This confused me at first because I thought how come they don't put one of these gauges on every ship?

Anyone who likes Master and Commander should watch the Hornblower series. There's six episodes, I believe, each about 90 minutes.

They don't have quite the Hollywood glamor of Master and Commander but that somehow makes it more realistic and believable. We have the set and watch the who series every six months or so.
