Figure starting salary of 190K. Most LS people come out with 100-150K debt. Any outcome where you're starting salary is greater than your total debt load is objectively good. No reason you can't pay that off in 2-5 years.

LJL, most kids at ASW aren't getting BIGLAW. BIGLAW being a good outcome has nothing to do with whether going to LS is an objectively good decision. It's T14 w/ $$$ at this point.

The reason it's bad isn't the money.

It's that most people do not last (fired or burnout) and then end up scrambling for plan B.

Would have been better to do med/dental or even CPA.

I had a deal sprung on me last Wednesday with a target closing date of the Wednesday following Labor Day (and there's no compelling reason whatsoever for that aggressive time line). So I worked until 10 last Friday night, 8 hours on Saturday, 12 hours on Sunday, until 2 am Monday, 5 am Tuesday, 10 pm Wednesday, and 4 am Thursday - all just to get initial drafts of all the docs out and deal with client comments. I literally care 0% about what our client is seeking to achieve (making money) and they could care less that they're pushing a group of people to the brink of insanity in their pursuit of making money. Meanwhile the partner who brought the deal in, and is doing absolutely nothing on the deal other than throwing out completely obvious comments while on client conference calls and acting like they're very savvy insightful tidbits, has given a fee estimate far below what it will actually cost to do the deal because he wants more work from the client. So we'll end up writing off like 30-40% of billable time so this guy can add another client to his portable book of business that he'll no doubt be taking to the next firm in 1-3 years and making millions. Bottom line: it's a terrible day to day existence for associates and there's virtually no chance at most firms of any big payoff.

Because it's fucking ridiculous to adhere to the completely unreasonable requests of a client and not then charge them for the cost they incurred. It doesn't impact my billables but it's just another example of why biglaw fucking sucks. It'd be one thing if we wee making the firm a shitload of money but instead we're working pro bono for some corporate client and the only person that benefits from that is the rainmaker partner who builds to his portable book.
